ProFootballFocus: Tackling, the downfall of the Panthers secondary

Recommended Posts

I think with the way the game is evolving you just need better defensive players than before. Years ago a beastly front 4 solved a lot of issues....and it still does but not to the same degree.

Need a stronger back 4 in today's NFL. Ours overall is weak. Need to find at least one stud S.

Weak LB core and lack of pass rush did make our secondary look bad but Martin was horrible at stopping the run as well. I think its funny how that column excuses Barber because of his role but does not excuse Godfrey when he was basically a extra LB all year.

Go back and look at Godfrey's career missed tackles....

You don't make excuses when someone consistantly has been poor in that aspect. You make excuses when a guy has a season that stands out from the norm

While Godfrey has produced high amounts of missed tackles, Sherod has manged to get the same amount in over 400 less snaps.

Also in the final table which shows the rate of missed tackles, Martin has the fourth worst in the entire NFL, while Godfrey isn't in the top fifteen. Though I'm sure he's not terribly far behind.

Martin is a much worse tackler, though he's shown to be a potentially good guy in coverage. Regardless this must be remedied.

But again, you have to look at Godfrey's career....it wasn't a fluke season of poor tackling. That was my only point. Martin's strength isn't suppose to be tackling but coverage....he was lousy at both which is a concern. Still with Martin it is only one season if poor coverage. Godfrey has been a lousy tackler his entire career yet is our SS

My post wasn't specifically directed at you. Obviously Godfrey has been poor. But that's those stats were over a three year span.

So Martins tackling issues in 2011 wasn't a fluke either. And while that isn't supposed to be his strength, it also shouldn't be bad enough thats he's ranked as the fourth worst tackler.

Our whole defense was bad against the pass.I had a few days and watched the season on NFL rewind.it appeared we were far worse at covering rbs and TEs ......more so than wrs.Captain was out of position and needs to be be moved back to Nback .Our entire secondary was horrible at tackling .....with S Martin grabbing at air much of the time.

We better hope these guys come back healthy this year.It was so bad that in the Lions game they did not have a rb that could catch so they put a wr at rb and sent him on routes.
