ProFootballFocus: Tackling, the downfall of the Panthers secondary

Recommended Posts

Pro Football Focus compiled tackling efficiency stats over the last three seasons for defensive back, and the Panthers secondary had two players in the bottom 10 in each category

There are also some other statistics of note.

Greg Olsen (Good: Drop Rate)- http://www.profootba...ate-tight-ends/

Mike Tolbert (Bad: Drop Rate)- http://www.profootba...-running-backs/

Jonathan Stewart (Bad: Drop Rate)- http://www.profootba...-running-backs/

Not surprising that nearly All of our starting secondary is on the BAD list. That certainly confirms what we could observe during games. Our secondary was just CRAP last year. We need to see improvement in all areas, not just DB. We have some better competition in camp, so hopefully that will raise the level somewhat. But truly...these guys shouldn't be needing to make so many open field tackles. Not to say its okay for them to miss. We need our linebacking situation to be consistent from early on. Our sideline to sideline defense was atrocious. And lets not forget that this secondary needs MUCH more help from our front four. Pressures and sacks must be up.

More than this its the scheme and the coaching. To me, Rivera is going to have to be very hands-on with the defense and almost be more like the coordinator. McDermott has not impressed. Give him one more year and if we don't finish in the top half in defense or we don't make the playoffs...kick him to the curb.

Fewer turnovers by the offense would also benefit the D.

I thought the secondarys job was to cover not tackle. Players should never make it to that level anyway.

Agree with this for the most part, but when a WR catches the ball in the flat, when the CB allows a completion and when a RB breaks to the outside it is on them to make the tackle.

It is a passing league....ball is put into the hands of opponents in the seconday more now than any time in NFL history. They have to cover and tackle....

Teams also don't run like they use to and teams are using the short pass as a run game which often takes the DL out of the equation

I think our secondary looked as bad as they did because of the following

1. Yes they were that bad

2. Pourous DL opened them up and exposed them to a lot of stuff that would have otherwise been muted.

3. Linebacker missed tackles and out of position

In the end I do think there is room for improvement but I also believe if the 7 guys in front of them improve then the secondary will by default get better.
