How many NFL teams have 2 legitimate every-down-feared WRs? I'd say 5-10 max...Falcons, Cowboys, Giants, Eagles, Packers, maybe the Bucs if Mike Williams bounces back, then you could probably make a case for the Steelers/Ravens. I think LaFell will be a GREAT #2 WR, we just have to eventually find Steve Smith's replacement at #1. We have someone who can stretch the field and is always a threat to score on every touch (Steve), and then we have a reliable possession receiver with great hands who you can count on to move the chains in clutch situations (LaFell). All I'm saying is that you don't need 2 "#1 WR"s to be successful on offense, it certainly helps, but I don't think you can fault the FO for not finding another serious threat opposite of Smith when less than a third of teams in the NFL have that. LaFell is everything you can ask for in a #2 WR. This is all my opinion of course...feel free to shoot me down.

but Smitty was really like hitting a lotto.....and we have lived on that for a LONG time.

Teams hit mini lottos and big ones. But I don't know if we can hope expect to hit another lotto ticket at WR to come in and replace Smitty.

We got the QB finally. He needs his Steve Smith. We don't need to waste time playing the lotto. Cam has a window. Carolina needs to be gearing to win big in the near the future. Start moving the investments from the backfield to D and WR.

The point is that you don't have to find a Steve Smith every year, just once every 7 to 10 years. We have plenty of guys who could end up being the next number 1. I don't say Smith because you don't find guys like him that often. We have invested in the wide receiver spot a number of times over the past 5 years and have done so this year with Adams. It isn't like you have to invest a first rounder every year. After all Smitty was a third rounder.

I'm actually the happiest I've been in awhile, when it comes to the WR corp. We have youth and potential across the board. If you throw enough darts at the board you're bound to hit a bulls eye.

Just looking at that list you named is daunting enough. Every one of these teams (save for the Bucs) threatens to be a contender every year (though some have turned out to be great pretenders). You absolutely have to include the Steelers, and probably the Ravens with the emergence of Torrey Smith. Moreover, some (especially here) would probably argue the fact, but the Saints*** most definitely had a threat in Meachem and Moore (not to mention the quasi-WR, Graham). I could make an argument that the 49ers with Crabtree, Manningham and Moss will be problematic, as well as Garcon and Moss in Washington, and perhaps less so the Bears with Marshall, Hester and Johnny Knox (and, now, Alshon Jeffery). Don't sleep on Demaryius Thomas and Eric Decker in Denver (particularly with Manning), and Bowe, Jonathan Baldwin and Breaston in KC. But, one team that I believe you have overlooked is perhaps the toughest of them all. The Pats have Welker, Branch, Lloyd, Stallworth, Gaffney (not to mention beastly TEs).

Now, of course one can argue the merits of some of these guys, but most (save for the rookie) have proven their aptitude and skill as guys who can and will burn you down the field. Looking at the last few Super Bowl winners, you can see why prolific, multifaceted offenses rule the day (and teams that want to contend this year for a championship, like the Pats, 49ers and Bears have added key pieces to their WR corps). All we can do is hope that one of our unheralded and/or unknown WRs surpasses expectations so we can be considered in that class in the not so distant future. I believe we are headed in the right direction, hopefully, but up to this point I am not giving the FO a pass on making one absolutely solid pick at WR, getting extremely lucky at another, and picking up one solid FA who perfectly filled a need right on time (Proehl), since the inception of the franchise.

Man, it's great to have tempered optimism in light of the new coaching staff and sipping the Cam Kool-Aid, but some of you have forgotten that the FO left Smitty out on an island for years (even to the point where he was contemplating leaving). Ultimately, I am going to have to see something more before I get giddy about any WR not named Steve Smith.

I would throw like a 6th this kids way.

He is getting a ton of hype b/c nothing is going on.

ANY other news story would have killed this story easily.

He's a boom or bust project kinda dude.

If Rambo had came out of GA it would be worth talking about.

I agree. I just know we will need to find a Steve Smith for the Newton era. Would rather play blackjack and go with a high pick than play the slots.

And when I say find a Smith I don't mean a similar player but a dominate #1 for Cam to play with over the next 7 yrs

I like having different types of receivers.I think we are missing that bigger receiver that you can count on getting separation. I am not knocking LaFell or Gettis but there were times when he was in single coverage that he could not get separation...he made some great plays....but disappeared at times..Gettis has top end speed but is sluggish getting off the line of scrimmage. The other thing is I do not see Smittys replacement on the team and he has played at a high level for as about as long as one should expect..Flash is not Smittys replacement.

We have a guy on our team Nelson Rosario who is very similar to Gordon. Rosario was a WR out of UCLA. He is 6'5" 225 lbs and ran a pro day 40 of 4.6. He was a UDFA but projected as a 6-7 rounder which is where Gordon would have gone in the regular draft.

He had 1100 yards and 5 TDs in 2011.

I am not suggesting we draft Gordon....just like the size and athletic ability.I like the same thing in Rosario but it seems his head is not in it.
