New Defensive Round-up & Discussion

Somehow I think the hardshipsmofnlastnyear will help a lot of guys on this team. I believe it will be apparent in the play of our defensive line. The reserves which are most probably Fua, Keiser, Neblett, etc. . . Are all very young and were thrown to the wolves last year. While its almost certain these guys all have limited ceilings they can all develop into solid contributors or role players. McClain should benefit as well but It McDermott actually has a rotation he should be able to coach more effectively

Uh... wtf?

Tucker will play DE in our system, correct???

Yeah, as far as I know...I think he's technically a pass-rushing OLB along the likes of a Suggs/Von/Orakpo (unfortunately I don't think he's as talented though...), so I'm sure he could play either position which is a plus in this system since I know Rivera likes versatility and playing around with different defensive formations.

Edit: too slow..

When people say we didn't add anyone in the off-season they are minimizing what we get back with our injured players returning. If we had picked up a free agent pro-bowler like Beason, added a free agent highly sought after NT in Edwards, and brought in a productive guy with 4 TDs and 700 yards at receiver like we have in Gettis coming back, most folks would be talking up how much better we got when you add our draft picks.

When you add that this year we will actually be running McDermott's aggressive scheme for the first time added to a new secondary coach, you have a defense that looked nothing like it did last year.

What we thought the defense was going to look like last year is going to happen this year.

i think this is going to be huge and something that few ever consider.

defenses usually come along at a slower pace than offenses in any normal season. when both offense and defense is new, then the defense is going to have even more problems getting started. when the core of your game-planning and scheme building is built on the strengths of your LB corps and that new run-stuffing DT you just got and then 2 of your key LBs and that DT you were expecting to help gets hurt, then it throws essentially all your planning out the window and you start over from scratch. (some would argue it shouldn't be that way, but it is and it makes sense)

the defense struggled in even learning what they were supposed to do because they were constantly shifting things/people around and just could not get settled into any groove.

with beason back, TD hopefully back, and the addition of keuchly...plus the remaining LBs from last year who got invaluable PT learning what mcdermott and rivera have in mind... the LBs should be the strength that the coaches were expecting/hoping for.

with edwards coming back and the new DTs with invaluable PT and experience, the DTs should be able to handle what the coaching staff wants.

also, with the addition of wilks, the secondary should have better coaching more in line with the scheme they are running so the players should be much better prepared. add in the competition that was brought in at safety and corner, we should be better off. those that were here last year probably benefited greatly from the PT they had last year so they know more of what to expect and what is expected from them.

also, rivera feeling more comfortable with his role of HC to the point that he knows he can step in and help with the D things should be even more improved.

a healthy defense will also help special teams because you won't have key ST personnel having to get "promoted" to playing D a lot and then having to use lesser players to carry out big time responsibilities and assignments. adding ST players such as we did will also help out STs quite a lot, but that's another discussion.

That's what a big chunk of my op was about after listing the additions...I'm not hearing many people say we didn't add anyone. We have the returners....but Beason imo is the only for sure top contributor. What I was trying to lay out is that in the end, we are still relying on health as the #1 priority which is why we could end up in a very similar situation to last year if some guys go down early. '

That's why I think we have to be patient beyond this season because we're still developing that d-unit...especially if one of our starting d-lineman/lb/cbs go down god forbid. People are expecting health to automatically make us better; which is true and that's nice optimism but's happened too many years on both sides of the ball to rely on as such a big reason for improvement. Beason brings back our gaping whole at both on the field and the intangibles in leadership which is phenomenal but the other's are still quite in the dark in Davis and Edwards.

The great thing is we now have legit LB depth and a hopefully more matured d-line with Hardy beefing up and our young interior guys entering their second seasons. Being healthy is good and it looks like our guys are getting back on track, but staying healthy is the real issue. Beason I'm comfortable with though...he's a monster
