Charlotte Bobcats President of Basketball Operations Rod Higgins announced July 7 that the team has signed first-round draft pick Michael Kidd-Gilchrist. The Bobcats selected Kidd-Gilchrist with the second overall pick in the 2012 NBA Draft.

Kidd-Gilchrist spent one season at the University of Kentucky, where he was a member of the Wildcats 2012 NCAA National Championship team. He averaged 11.9 points, 7.4 rebounds and 1.9 assists in 40 games.

An early entry candidate, the 6-7 Kidd-Gilchrist earned First Team All-Southeastern Conference and SEC All-Freshmen honors. He ranked second on the team in rebounding, third in blocks (37) and steals (37) and fourth in scoring. During the Wildcats NCAA Tournament Championship run, he captured the South Region’s Most Outstanding Player honors and was nominated for both the John R. Wooden Award and Naismith Men’s Basketball Player of the Year award.

The Charlotte Bobcats signed No. 2 overall pick Michael Kidd-Gilchrist Saturday, which will allow the rookie small forward to participate in summer-league practices and games starting Tuesday in Las Vegas.

Under the rookie pay scale, salaries for first-round picks are slotted based on draft position. Kidd-Gilchrist will make about $4 million this season. His contract is guaranteed this season and next, and then the Bobcats will have two one-season options, based on the collective bargaining agreement.

The Bobcats have yet to sign second-round pick Jeff Taylor, a small forward from Vanderbilt. Taylor was the first pick of the second round, 31st overall.

The two rookies are expected to play in Las Vegas along with Kemba Walker and Bismack Biyombo, who were rookies for the Bobcats last season. The Bobcats will practice in Las Vegas Tuesday through Thursday and then start playing games Friday.

Note: With MKG making four million, and the qualifying offers to Derrick Brown and D.J. Augustin; the Bobcats are still roughly eight million dollars under the salary cap.
