No mention of LCD. True LED is only LED. If you have an LCD monitor with LED display, don't buy. It's asinine.

The only difference is the LCD back light so it reduces the overall power required and improves quality what's wrong with that?

I think there's some confusion here. So I'll tell you the difference between Normal LCDs, LED LCDs, LED Displays and OLED Displays.

LED TVs and Monitors are still LCDs. Regular LCDs use fluorescent lighting for the backlighting. LED LCDs use LED lighting. The Backlighting is what creates the contrast and powers the image to your eyes.

Actual LED displays which only use LEDs for the imaging AND the lighting are for HUGE displays like the big screen at BoA.

OLED Displays are probably the one Ivan is referring to. "Organic" LED. Using bioluminescence to create ultra small patches of LEDs. It's the one that's pure tiny LEDs. These are usually found in phone(AMOLED) in portable appliances although there's been some use in displays. I'm not sure but I think I've seen a monitor or some sort of display with it before.

All in all, the technologies are really different but of course whenever they market it, they have to make it confusing and sound similar. The odds that the marketed "LED Monitor" is actually an LED Backlit LCD is pretty high. For example...

All of the above in the spoiler are marketed as LED Monitor. But they are LCD panels with LED backlighting.

When I search for OLED on newegg, I get a bunch of portable devices like mp3 players, PS Vita, even some cameras.

So TL;DR version,

LED Monitor refers to LCD with LED Backlighting

LCD is Fluorescent Backlighting

Large Displays may use individual LED bulbs

OLED displays are still relatively new and are usually found in portable devices.

Thanks Seamonk I'm going to go with 23" LCD LED Backlit monitor because pure LEDs are too expensive. Also 1080p HDMI 5 ms response is nothing to sneeze at.

You want this. LED is superior to LCD.

LCD= Liquid Crystal Dislplay

VS

LED= Light Emitting diode

LED is superior in ever aspect. Crisp lighting, energy efficiency. Each Diode having all the basic color schemes RGB, RBYG. Less effort than LCD. Trust me I used to sell light bulbs and had to know every nook and cranny about lighting and why its better to buy this bulb than that bulb.

I recommend people who are buying a HDTV to buy the LED version instead of the LCD version always. LED will outlast the LCD every single time. Never buy plasma. Once they are fuged you can't fix them.
