Fox/Hurney's Tenure for the Panthers

When Fox loses control of this team like Capers and Seifert did then he will be replaced. We can speculate when he will be replaced but as long as He fights, stay competitive and runs a good team. I don't see JR making changes and starting over. Everyone seems to think that if he doesn't "take the next step" he'll be gone. Fox goes when the team quits.

The best DT we have ever had in Carolina wanted out in 07 and there were signs there was trouble in the lockerroom. Now the best DE to ever play in Carolina wants out. The DC just quit b/c he didn't think he "fit" in Carolina and with Fox any longer........if the teams does quit on him this season.....we can't say there were not warning signs......we just decided to look at them w/ homer vision. I'm not saying they are signs there is trouble behind the scenes....I just would rule it out entirely. Fox at this point has not been consistant w/ his teams in Carolina and we have become one of the most up and down franchises in the NFL imo. If Fox has another down year it would be the ideal time for JR to look to move the team in a new direction and imo that is exactly why they will wait to look at Fox's contract until at least midway into next season.

Just because Tennessee feels like keeping a head coach who's been there for like 15 seasons and still hasn't won a superbowl doesn't mean we should.

i have been guilty of calling him one of the best coaches in the NFL in the past. using the same standards i have for what i want the panthers to do, i honestly cant. the really good ones get results. they win consistently and consistently put your team in a position to win it all.

fisher hasn't done that. fox really hasn't either. both still could but i don't think you wait 15 years to find out.

yes why not

*EDIT. By yes I mean I would consider them consistent after that.

....but they haven't done it yet.

I hear ya.. was just curious how you might look at it if we actually had 3 winning seasons in a row.

And really that's what my post was about, I'm just throwing it out there that we will be seeing the next 2 seasons as winning seasons. It's just speculation...

and if we do have 3 consecutive winning seasons then I'd say it did take them 8 years to find out... lol

But see just saying "it took 8 years" isn't fair. Their first 2 years were very successful... Fox turning the 1-15 team into 7-9 was success none-the-less. Then we wen to the Superbowl.

Then he faced injuries and this is where I think they started trying to figure out how to overcome these obstacles. Even with the injuries, they still pulled out great records.. Perhaps thats just my opinion. But I bet in '04 and '06, most "respectable" teams might not even make 7-9 or 8-8...

So what I'm saying is, perhaps it was 5 or 6 years it took to overcome obstacles. 5 years if you take out '05.. Not every year of those 8 were bad...

With all that said, we could go 6-10 next year.. But I'm just speculating the best years are coming up.

Sorry dude, but only a person hiding under a rock wouldn't have noticed we had one of THE best locker rooms in the league last year.

Even so, 1 or 2 players doesn't make up for the other 51 on the team. Can't say I agree with that basis at all.

great post....but left out the stubbornness .

Thats my main issue with him.

Fox will continue to run the same formula even if he does not have the players to execute it. If our offense is banged up and our defense is not playing well - I do not agree with thowing away possesions.

Fox has done this time and time again.

If we get the ball back with under 2 minutes before a half he is so content with letting time run out and heading back to the locker room.

If our defense is struggling then we should be trying to put up as many points as possible-espcially when playing against high calibar offenses like the Saints. I am not a fan of the time control, field position strategy. Its risky, and if you do have a awesome defense its very risky.

also holding on too long to:

Foster

morgan

Jake- some feel that way, some dont

stubbornness in holding onto a strategy gets me the most.

enough of this, though. i am trying to feel positive about this coming year. our chances are good. no sense in dwelling on what should happen if we have a bad year. life is good, the team is healthy and solid, we have some new big playmakers coming in. we have some new coaches. things are lining up for a very solid year. this year should be good.

/my part in thread

I think some of you guys are just in a "grass is greener on the other side" kind of mentality. As a fan, all you can really ask for is a chance to go to the playoffs every year and maybe win it all. Fox gives us a chance to do that every year. It has been a while since I thought we had no chance of making the playoffs before the season started. Some suggestions for taking his spot I saw in this post were Schotty and Cower. Shotty has never won the super bowl...what is he gonna bring that Fox doesn't? Cower won 1 in 15 years..I think Fox will win at least one if he stays that long.

I agree that he needs to put together two winning seasons, and I think they will this year. Saying they need to make it to the nfc championship or he is gone is kinda over the edge. Alot can happen in a season. I also agree he doesn't need to be so loyal to certain players, but that is just the process of growing as a hc. I'm no insider, but I think it is pretty widely believed around the league that Fox is near the top when it comes to HC's, and I don't think we should take it for granted having him here.

I think it's right around the corner and some people aren't watching...

Couldnt disagree more...expecting less in not exceptable. We had home field last year and we were one game away! Why would you be OK with less then NFC championship game??

Of course we may have injuries and WE would have to take that into account.

If injuries do occur and changes to the game plan/strategy are not changed to account for those injuries-he will have to be accountable for that.

In '06 we were second the the league for games missed due to injuries, so iwouldnt write that off as "growing pains".

In 07 we lost our QB, again, not sure that qualifies as growing pains.

Every year Fox has had a healthy team he's got to the playoffs outside of his first season.

Im happy with Fox and Hurney.

as much as i hate fox's BS sometimes this is TRUE

Fox's strategy to run the football and stop the run is the mantra of most of the coaches in the NFL. Developing a big imposing offensive line and slamming the ball down the throat of the opposition is what every team would like to do. Unfortunately not everyone can find those big guys who are also athletic enough to get to the outside on run plays as well as block in pass protection. It has taken us several years to develop our line under Fox.

Fox is stubborn and it has served us well most of the time. He has a philosophy he believes in and he has doggedly built our team into a physical team that tries to control the ball and impose our will on the other team. Sure there have been miscues and mistakes along the way. But for the most part this team is light years ahead of the one he inherited in 2002.

Coaches have to have a set of strongly held beliefs and principles that guide the team. He has to convince the players to buy into that philosophy and execute it. He can't afford to go back and forth pursuing the next best thing or latest fad. Fox is stubborn and needs to be. His teams possess 3 out of the 4 winning seasons in our history. And he is about to give us back to back winning seasons which is something teams like Atlanta can't say after 30 years in the league.

I expect us in the playoffs this year but whether we make it or not, it won't decide Fox's fate. As long as the players believe in him and play hard for him, Richardson will keep him. After all he knows football and knows how hard it is to win in the league consistently.

i bet if you take away all of the bad seasons of any coach they look good as well.

we were talking about the years he might have had to grow as a coach, not the years he looks good or bad... the 1st 2 years he obviously didn't have obstacles to overcome..

noone said anything about take out the years he looks bad and keep the ones where he looks good.
