I might need a new bed or a new pair of running shoes. About 1.5 to 2 miles into a 4 mile run, my lower back starts hurting. It's an over exertion pain, not a "I'll need 5 grams of flexerall, before I can crawl into my Mustang" kind of pain. I'm not much of a runner, in fact, I hate running, but I want to do a 10K next spring in under 40 minutes.

could be shoes, how many miles do you have on them?  Also could be posture.  I've found I have to remind myself to run more upright vs. leaning over.  Helps with breathing too.  (thats a pretty fast pace btw, congrats)

Getting ready to go out for a 4 miler myself.  Man its hot. Then a 16-miler on Sunday morning, hopefully cooler.

The shoes are close to needed replacement, but I should be able to get another 50-100 miles out of them. I do try to focus on posture and breathing isn't an issue. I could go fast but I messed up my leg preparing for the 10K earlier this year. I'm progressing slower. This is also the last pair of Nike running shoes I get. My previous pair was New Balance and I was happier with them.

Understand about the shoes. I've worn Asics for the last several years, with little problems.  A couple weeks ago I had the genius idea of switching shoe brands in the middle of marathon training.  Bad idea. Brooks felt great at first but at mile 13 last week they were killing my big toes.  I mean extreme pain,  hard to walk kind.  Ordered some new Asics and things are ok for now.

I gotta admit, I lurk on this entire forum a lot.  I read what people say and never really have an input.  Usually because someone has already posted with the exact reply I would have had.  (Which Pie is awarded).  I've learned my lesson about the tinderbox (that place is crazy).  Somehow I always end up in this thread reading and I eventually found the motivation to get off my ass.

I started in March watching my diet, cutting soda, smaller portion sizes and more vegetables/fresh foods.  I dropped Ten pounds without attempting any excercise.  As soon as the weather heated up, I started with light excercises (basketball, hitting a poo ton of golf balls, light weight excercises) just to get myself used to the prospect of an excercise schedule.

Since June I started an actual workout schedule for my week and unless unforeseen circumstances occur I usually stick to it. (about every other week something pops up).  I haven't lost any more weight, in fact i gained all of the "fat" weight back in muscle.  When I go a day w/o excercise I feel horrible.  Just wanted to send a shout out to everyone in this particular thread for giving someone motivation to change their habits.  This is one of the harder things to do.  Hopefully I can keep it up.

P.S.  I ran a mile the other day in under 10 minutes for the first time since high school, and while I felt like I was going to die afterward, It was one of the more satisfying feelings i've had in awhile.

P.P.S. We're on page 69....giggity.

Good deal. The best advice I will offer is to set firm achievable goals with deadlines, track everything, hold yourself accountable, and do it for you.

That's awesome! Good luck, we're all here for encouragement :)

Yep, that's the exact reason I started this thread.  :)

Makes me happy.

I hit chest today with this huge guy I've talked to once or twice before... (he's a panthers fan).

He lugs in these giant chains... does bench with them.  50 lbs each.

He did 5 reps with 315 and the chains.  Then we were talking and I mentioned that Ravens guy that they said did 31 reps at 225 when he was 16.

This guy pumps out 28 reps after 5 sets with the chains...  impressive.

He really pushed me today too.  I suspect I'll be sore as hell tomorrow.

Obviously I know shoes, but I also remember reading an article a few months ago. Use this flowchart from runners world to pick best shoe. If you actually are dealing with pain often, you can also try a show like Z-coil. I got a pair when dealing when plantar fasciitis
