oh i also weigh 185.

So if my math is right, I gotta push 510 to roll with you. Phew, that's heavy... I'll get there. Honestly I think my legs can handle it, I'm worried more about my back.

...and what'd u pull on deads, 504? I got to get up to 580... Not there yet either... I'm ready to try 550 again, I'm pretty sure I can pull it now... I've pulled 500 even x 2 last set the last three times I've deaded, just haven't gone up from that.

Question

Do guys typically lift a lot of weight to look good or to be strong or is it both?

Typically people that lift for aesthetics only will avoid serious heavy lifting.

Lifting like this takes a toll on your CNS, and days of doing 5x5@80% BS takes a lot of time away from bis/tris or whatever bro split people tend to be working on. Guys that lift to look good focus only on a few muscle groups, and heavy squats ain't one of them.

That said, a good, healthy lifting program will incorporate a number of compound lifts, as they're the ones that derive the greatest health boons, whether they be cardio strength/bone density/whatever.

Me personally: I'm hoping to make the crossfit games this year, and I've been on a heavy strength cycle for the last 3 months. My body has changed shaped. I don't really care, and in the next few months of heavy metconning I'll probably drop down to 175 and be "cut" or "ripped" or whatever.

At the end of the day, do what makes you happy. I understand the appeal of having the eight pack and whatever, and there was a time I cared about it, but lifting weights is just so much more fun. I think I still look pretty good, and maybe at some point I'll decide to just gym bro it out and start cruising anavar or whatever.

Or maybe I'll split the difference like Klokov: do oly with an hour a day of beach body workouts.

Yeah I mean basically what Fiz said...   I started lifting to do just that really... to maintain weight and look better, build muscle...

Then it kind of morphed into powerlifting...  before my shoulder surgery in 2010 I worked out a good bit, but wasn't too serious and didn't have a very good plan.

When I finally recovered from my shoulder surgery to the point that I could start lifting again, I was 38 years old and figured that if I was going to fully recover and not lapse into a fat guy sitting in a chair all day everyday, I'd better get serious.

I started reading stuff online, watching videos about exercises and correct technique and really changing the way I worked out.  Once I was 100% again with my shoulder, I hooked up with some guys in my gym and it morphed into more power lifting...  I discovered that I was pretty good at certain lifts and stronger than most guys my size so it kind of went from there.

Fiz is right... I definitely see changes from lifting heavy... some in appearance but most in just overall "feeling better"... now that I workout heavy compound lifts like deadlift and squat, my lower back is much, much better (both pain wise and just feeling confident about doing things) than it's ever been.  Almost everyone in my entire family has back trouble, especially around the age that I am now, and I think I'm avoiding most of that by keeping my back strong.

I have to be honest tho, some of it is just that's it's damned cool to pick up some heavy poo that other people just can't...

Just got back off a cruise where I ate terribly for the most part. Worked out everyday though. Jeans are fitting tight this morning. I think it's time to pull out the Insanity DVDs even though my knee still has a little knot on it.
