Crossfit is like anything else... you get out of it what you put into it...

Two things I have noticed however... people that are into Crossfit think that it's the only workout in the world and anything else is inferior.

It seems to me that watching videos and stuff of the exercises look not so safe...

DtB may be above posting crossfit gifs, but I'm not.  This may be the craziest one I've seen...

One night our Krav Maga instructor phoned in sick at the last minute, so they merged us with the CrossFit class for a night. We had all been joking about it, because to the MMA guys, we all just thought that CrossFit was just the gym equivalent of Zumba, because it was basically just an all girl's class, and involved no contact. I can that Biscuit is right about one thing; you get out of it what you put into it. I remember being so exhausted that by the end of the class I couldn't lift myself off the mat. But that was also probably a function of a) being in a room full of my buddies doing what we considered a girly exercise program, and no one wanted to half-ass it, so we all went 100% the whole time, and B) it was a room full of hot 20-something chicks in yoga pants. Of COURSE we were trying to show off.

But that was about 4 years ago at this point. When we did it, it was basically an Insanity workout, with some kettle-bells, jump rope and pull-ups sprinkled in. Who knows how they run it now? It seems like they just do absurd workouts and bizarre techniques in an effort to seem hard core. But before you discount it, go check out the class and see how they run it. It all hinges on the instructor. See if they are just doing showy stuff. Because outside of the day we did a Tabata workout in class (4 people out of about 24 threw up), that CrossFit was the most exhausting workout I ever did.

Insanity with some pull ups and weights thrown in sounds awesome.

I'm trying to keep an open mind going in. I doubt i make the class a routine, since I enjoy working out at home and it doesn't take me away from my kid that much. He's out of town this week so we have a list of everything we want to try together but never have the ability to do it.

Did cross fit last night followed by a yoga class. They had a bar and we did back squats to warm up. One each time and then you add more weight until you max out. I didn't realize that was how it worked or I would have kept going, I stopped at 105 lbs. could have done more especially since it was just one squat. I thought at some point we'd be doing more than one squat ( my silly assumption).  Then we did 16 minutes of pull ups and burpees (8 pull ups every other minute, 8 burpees every other minute). I used the band, so the pull ups were easy, burpees were fine, by the end we were drenched, It was fun, they split you in groups of two so you had a team feeling/competition feeling going on and a time limit.

Overall I don't think it's for me because I like longer work outs with more variety however it even further my interest in getting a bar for my house. Squating with dumbbells feels very different.

Maybe I'm misunderstanding:  You alternated pull ups and burpees?  Or you did 8 of one movement, rested for a minute, and then 8 more?  8 doesn't seem like a lot, but then again, I don't know how long that went on.

Sounds like a fun workout.  I feel like you got your variety in without knowing it, though.  After all, you said you had never done cross fit before, so there you go--something different.

The pull up/burpee went for 16 mintues.  First minute you do 8 pull ups, next minute you do 8 burpees, next 8 pull ups, then the next minute 8 burpees. Obviously when you start it's quite easy and the first few rounds you have a lot of time left in that minute to rest. As it gets harder it takes you more time and you get less of a rest. Since I was using a band to do pull ups I had about 35 seconds of rest each round making it not to difficult for me.  My husband didn't use the band for pull ups til the very end. Bascially you're doing 64 pull ups and 64 burpees within 16 minutes.

edit: As far as variety, I meant I like more than just a handful of moves.
