How long does it take to build up more strength in the upper body? I've been doing a lot of exercises for chest and arms/back for months but am still fairly weak in that area.????

Women aren't going to see strength gains like men will, you don't have the muscle mass and testosterone for it... but you should see some gains, even if minor.

Hard to put a number on it. I can only go off my experience I went from not being able to do one standard push up to easily popping out a set of 20 in less than 2 months.

That's damned impressive Cat... I wonder how many women (or men for that matter) can do 20 pushups?

Have you tried to see how many you can do at one time?

I did last year when Panthro was talking about that pushup challenge and got 49... my pecs were burning so bad I had to stop...  that's a very aerobic activity as well.

I cannot do a freaking push-up. It's pathetic. Damnit.

Try these:

Low plank (bent elbow; 10 seconds)

Shoulder press (5 lb weights?)

Cheat push-up (w knees on floor too w your toes)

Focus on pushing up w your pecs, taking some strain away from your triceps and shoulders).

Everybody has to start somewhere. You will definitely see tremendous gains to start considering what I've gleaned from your posts about your current fitness level. Good luck!

Dips are a good way to increase pec strength. Obviously they also hit the shoulders and triceps as well. Find a machine that will assist you at first until you get the hang of it.
