I did an upper body workout last night. Been doing more of those the last 3 weeks or so. My arms and shoulders were huge by the end of it. I mean gross huge and I'm not exaggerating, my head and neck looked all tiny in comparison.  I tried to ignore it because i figured once the muscles relax they wont look so big, but they still look too big. Now I'm all freaked out.

I'm not sure what to do to get them to shrink a little. I figure I wont lift weights for a while, but should I stop push ups too? I really would like to keep doing the push ups since they are apart of many of my cardio routines and I don't want to loose my ability to do them at the rate or close to the rate I'm at.

Well, you definitely get a pump when you do stuff like that... it's probably not what you're thinking tho...

I definitely wouldn't stop doing pushups.  They do work your shoulders a little, but it's mainly arms/chest and a little lats.

You got any advice for Lola above on diet stuff?  i'm a little out of my element there.

Ok, question. I'm trying to maintain my current weight but I don't think I'm eating enough calories. I'm afraid that if I do, I'm gonna ruin what I've done. I eat a lot of lean protein, veggies etc. I can't bring myself to eat many carbs. What can I eat??

Why do you think you aren't eating enough calories?  Do you mind telling me your height, weight and calorie intake?

If you want more healthy calories eat an avocado a day or an apple with peanut butter (read the back of the jar,by the peanut butter that says only peanuts and maybe salt under the ingredients)

I am trying to tone up a little and lose weight. My doctor pretty much told me to cut back on carbs and basically fast food is out of the picture. You would think I am obese by what people have been saying. As far as the gym side, should I just focus on cardio and leave weights alone if all I want to do is slim down? I am afraid lifting weights will make me gain weight in which it feels that way right now.

This seems to be a common concern. I'd lift at least some 10-15 mins. Truth is you may gain some weight at first but it's just all your fat turning to muscle. I've gained around 10lbs the last two years but I'm wearing the smallest clothing size I've ever worn and you can feel/see the muscle. I try not to weigh myself often because it can get in my head.

However if seeing the scale drop is the only thing that will motivate you to working out, then just do some cardio for a few months and then maybe you will get comfortable lifting.

I need to slimdown as well but I refuse to cutdown on food I eat.  I will eat smaller portions but I will continue to eat fast food (1-2 times a week) and I will reduced my alcohol intake to just weekends (beer and wine).  I'm 6'1 and 215lbs.  I can run 7k without stopping and i'm in pretty good physical shape... I just got a beer belly :(

I was 208lbs until I start lifting again... Now, 1 month later I'm 215lbs.  But I can tell I slimmed down a little.  I lift for about 70 minutes 2-3 times a week.  I do a lot of chest... I do sets of 8 with dumbbells.  I start with 55lbs then 70bs, then 65lbs then 60lbs then 55lbs then 50lbs then 45lbs and then 40lbs.  Then I use chest and shoulder machines usually 3 sets of 8 around 100lbs.  Then I do biceps and triceps. Then I do sit-ups, pull-ups and other crap.

Oh ok Thanks. That makes sense. I don't want to make weight my primary focus. With me, it is more so about body composition than anything else.  I want to look and feel better. Just want to live a healthy life and I know I have to make a little more changes in my "diet" to help. Enemy number=beer/alcohol.

Cat makes a good point...  I wouldn't worry about your weight, and subsequently I wouldn't worry about lifting weights.  If you gain weight from lifting, that's because you're adding muscle which is heavier than fat anyway and will then help you burn more fat...

I really couldn't care less what I weigh...  body composition is where it's at.
