Hiked 8+ miles at Grandfather Mountain yesterday. If you guys and gals haven't had a chance to do it, it's awesome! Some trails are rated "advanced," but if you're adventurous, you can do it no problem without any special knowledge needed. Had a blast with the 9 people in my group (organized by the Maxx Fit instructor at my gym). Popped a muscle relaxer after that long day before bed. Man, didn't think I would like that kind of thing.

Went to the gym today after all that. Chest day. Definitely needed that extra shot of pre I took. Had to close my eyes and take deep breaths and listen to some music before each set because I was mentally and physical exhausted. I got through it, though, and actually got some good pump but just had to take my time.

Did I mention I'm in the middle of a move to Uptown and hauled a library of books and an entire kitchen to my new place? Well, I did that, too.

Nothing worth achieving comes easy.

Ok, what is a pistol squat? Is this something I can do?

Are you a chick?  If so, it's probably more up your alley then a big dude and because you're a chick.  Guys COG is the shoulder.  Women, the hips.  Easier to balance and usually they're not as top heavy.

Another video - this time a woman

Edit:  I go to a very large gym, at least for where I live.  There are 3 men there who can do it.  Of the maybe 100 that I know that workout I have asked at least half to try it and the other half I have not even bothered because I know they couldn't.  It's a lot harder then it looks.

I hope to have the planche pushup by the end of year, too.

Mountain hiking is no joke.  I am talking real hiking, spending more then 2 hours of hiking, preferably over 4 hours.  There is a longer trail from the base of the mountain all the way up, it almost figure 8's around it but due to evalation changes it doesn't cross.  It is over 14 miles iirc.

Also a good one just for fun is up near Danville.  Mt. Airy's Pilot Mtn is pretty nice for hiking, too.

What are you guy's favorite workouts for traps?

I do four main trap exercises.

Standing dumbbell shrugs

Standing barbell shrugs

Standing shrug machine

Behind the back shrugs on the Smith Machine

Obviously they get hit on shoulder presses and some upper back stuff too.

I do my traps on Shoulder day, which is today for me.

I honestly prefer either the machine or barbell shrugs... I can go a lot heavier on those and keep good form.

On dumbbells I go a little lighter and try to get more of a contraction at the top.

good gawd that's a lot of trap work.  Listen to biscuit.  He has traps like mount everest.

I on the other hand do not directly work the traps in any of my movements, but they get some work on deadlifts, upright rows, pull ups, pull downs

but I also don't want giant traps.

Strong traps help you pick up heavy poo.

dang it.  you're right.  Going to have to add shrugs.  I've been considering this for a while.

I'm contemplating going to a 4 day split after only being on a 3 day split this whole time.

Now I just have to figure out how to divide the exercises.

About to head to the gym with a lower rep routine for deadlifts.

Im  starting to incorporate push ups and pull ups as a supplement to one of my arm and chest days. In the past I've seen quicker gains through pull ups and push ups. Simply because of ease of access( i have an iron gym) and you can do push ups anywhere. I really need to buy a cheap weight set off craiglist so I can bench press when I'm hanging around the house.

I also jump rope after every workout now with a longer emphasis on certain days. Sounds odd but only after 2 weeks or so I can tell I'm burning fat from it. Almost like the cardio is making the gains of weight lifting more noticeable. I also find it a lot easier to run now.

I do five days really...  Back, Chest, Legs, Shoulders/Traps, and Cardio and I deadlift every other leg day so that works out to one deadlift day per week basically.

In that order?

I don't know if I could do a lot of trap work the day after I deadlift.
