I've mentioned in other threads, but my wife is black and we joke about the swimming issue all the time. From my earliest memories, I always knew how to swim. Additionally, I don't ever remember using "floaties" or anything, I just knew how to swim. My wife says she can swim, but refuses to go under the water and rarely ever takes her feet off the ground.

I really do think there needs to be more effort made to teach minorities, namely black youths, how to swim at an early age.

I'm having problems now because our kids are horrified of water. I can't explain it, and I'm generally a good teacher with something I know how to do, but anytime I get my kids in the pool, they hold onto my arm with a deathgrip and will not let go. I try all the advice I ever got with them and it doesn't work.

I've even went to the basics about holding your breath under water, as soon as my daughter feels the water get to eye level, she jumps up like someone just tried to push her down... I'm gonna see about getting them in the YMCA or something this summer for lessons. I have no idea what to do.

YMCA is good. When my kids went they made the parents leave the area so the kids don't have Mommy or Daddy to run to. Pretty sure they still do it that way. My daughter was afraid of the water until last week, until she "clicked". Now we are scared, we won't let her out of our sight because she thinks she can swim across the pool by herself.

I was a Ski and Snowboard instructor on Beech Mtn in the Youth Learning center for 12 years and one thing that I've always told parents....if you want them to learn DO NOT TEACH THEM YOURSELF. Give them to a trained professional stranger and they'll learn, otherwise you'll be beating your head against the wall.

Well yeah, I mean there's always the sink or swim method. I was more speaking about actually "teaching" swimming, just just learning how not to die in the water.

Just picking, I grew up in the water, and to this day am in/on it almost every day.

Took the boat out with the little lady to an empty island and drank beers and lounged pretty much all day yesterday. Great life.

Zod is absolutely correct. When I moved to NC from SoCal, I got my first exposure to the huge cultural and historic issues facing blacks in the South. The small town I live in had a huge punlic pool at one time back in the 50's and 60's. Blacks were not allowed to use the pool and I've asked several people I know if that was why they never learned how to swim. They all- to a person- agreed.

In other news, Rodney King drowned in his own pool last week...
