Hurricanes send seven qualifying offers

Recommended Posts

The Carolina Hurricanes today extended qualifying offers to forwards Drayson Bowman, Zach Boychuk, Evgenii Dadonov, Jerome Samson, Chris Terry and Jeremy Welsh and goaltender Mike Murphy.

Bowman, Boychuk, Samson and Welsh all saw stints in Raleigh last season – Bowman’s being the longest by far at 37 games – and will be expected to once again be in contention for a roster spot in training camp.

Forwards Cedric McNicoll and Matthew Pistilli and defenseman Kyle Lawson did not receive qualifying offers and will become unrestricted free agents on July 1.

Forwards Brett Sutter and Justin Soryal and goaltender Justin Peters are group six unrestricted free agents by virtue of their age and games played in the National Hockey League.

By qualifying Murphy, the Canes will retain the 23-year-old’s rights will he plays in Russia’s Kontinental Hockey League. Rumors have circulated about Dadonov potentially returning to Russia to play in the KHL; if he does so, the Canes will also retain his rights.

Jim Rutherford, the Canes' president and general manager, has said that defensemen Bryan Allen and Jaroslav Spacek will test the free agent market. Forward Chris Durno and defenseman Mathieu Roy are also unrestricted free agents.
