Plaxico coming to Charlotte?

Why shouldn't they? What multiple Super Bowls have the Panthers won? What's the point in only signing practice squad players?

The 49ers signed Moss what do the Panthers organization know that the 49ers don't? The Patriots signed Ocho last season and now the Dolphins have followed suit, what's so horrific about signing a proven veteran for the cheap when you're going into a promising season with alot of unproven players, Plaxico would instantly be a upgrade Red Zone target for Newton, if we're really about winning championships we should take chances and make moves that championship organization do all the time.

Fact is we're going to have to overpower teams offensively if we are going to be successful, we still have alot of young unproven talent on defense, and as good as Beason is and as good as rookie Kuechly could be, those two players alone aren't going to instantly make this a top defense, so we are banking on alot of ifs and hopes on that side of the ball.

So instead of asking why, ask why not?

It's really not a fact that we will have to overpower teams. I gave you pie anyway.

This board is so predictable whenever there is a hint of a veteran WR coming here---whether it's real or imagined.

I don't have any problem with Plax coming here on the cheap. I really don't understand why people always bring up the development of Gettis and LaFell. If they are going to shine, they are going to shine anyway. Moreover, I am not really concerned about Plax's antics. He really didn't do anything last year off the field that warrants concern. Plus, the dude is getting too old to complain and would probably be happy just to be on a squad, especially our squad that is lead by Cam Newton. This is Newton's team, and everybody knows it. Furthermore, there is no WR in the NFL that can actually unseat Smitty as the most respected WR in the locker room. Burress would fall in line, or fall out of a job. It's that simple. It's not like he has really has the history of 85 or T.O., or even V-Jax (who wasn't in our budget).

If we can get him on the cheap, he'd obviously be able to take pressure off Smitty, and be there if Smitty or either one of our other guys can't go. Yeah, we probably won't do it knowing the history of our FO, but it would be a fresh departure from a conservative philosophy (that in recent years has bordered on near failure in my opinion) that lacks perspective and vision pertaining to the state of our WR corps.

Good luck!

I trust Lafell won't reach 1k yards and no more than 5 tds.

Its unlikely that anyone not named Steve Smith reaches a 1000 yards next year even if PB is on the team. We spread it around and run it to much. Not sure about the TD's, but I have a feeling that a very high percentage of our TD's will be on the ground next year, just as they were last year.

I didnt know this was the same panther team from years past. I mean we did sign shockey last year tho right?? What a failure that was....

Not quite the same situation.

At the time, the team needed a veteran presence in the TE unit, and Shockey had history with Chudzinski.

We already have our veteran presence in the receiving corps, and there's no history I know of with Burress and anyone on staf. Plus, let's face it, Burress isn't exactly a role model or a leader that you'd want your younger players to follow.

panthers not interested

http://blogs.charlotte.com/panthers/

Gantt confirms....

PFT: Clearing the air on Plaxico Burress and the Panthers

Based on an interview he did with a Charlotte radio station, somehow people got the idea the Panthers might be interested in wide receiver Plaxico Burress.

I promise I won’t play this card too often. But having covered the Panthers for a year or two (OK, 14), let me clear this one up.

The Panthers are not interested in Burress.

Not for the league minimum. Not to compete for a job in camp. Not at all.

That’s not new or according to a source with knowledge of the situation, or anything like that. Just a fact. (Although I may have a source or two there, and they’re usually fairly incredulous every time this comes up).

The answer is no.

There are several things at work here, not the least of which is they have a young receiver they really like in Brandon LaFell.

Somehow, the Panthers have become a bit of a clearinghouse for vets looking for work to float as a possibility. Maybe it’s because in the old days, they’d throw money around a bit more than they do now (Keyshawn Johnson and the $6 million in parting gifts). Maybe it’s because Charlotte’s a fairly righteous place to live (Former Panthers defensive tackle Brentson Buckner called it “The Married Man’s Paradise” and I kind of agree).

Plax may not come here, but what I'm saying is people who are acting like Lafell is going to be a what some people are calling "clutch" or a legit no.2 wr are out of their minds. Quit hyping Lafell and Gettis up like they're top wr. IMO, both of them are not even in the top 40-50 wr in the league. I know its the offseason but really its time to quit it already. Last year it was Gettis getting all the attention, and now its Lafell. Once the dude prove hes real, then yall can talk. But now dude hasnt prove anything yet.

People wanna say, but WOW he was a third option last year. He was a clutch wr.

NO WAY!

He shouldve play better than that last year. Just bc hes was the third option it wasnt like Legudu was taking snaps away from him.

Cam threw more passes of 517 to Aaron Rodgers' 502 attempts. The thing is Rodgers third, fourth fifth options puts up close the same yards, but even more tds than Lafell.

(1opt: Jennings, 2opt: Nelson)

Finley: 55 rec, 767 yds, 8 tds

Donald Driver: 37 rec, 445 yds, 6tds

James Jones: 38 rec, 635 yds, 7tds

So don't be all over Lafell's nuts. Im just being real.

I don't have the slightest bit of faith when it comes to the Panthers' front office and picking wide receivers. It appears that the FO believes that lightning strikes twice. When the brass picked Steve Smith, they were more lucky than anything else. No one had the foresight to think that he would turn into the beast that he is, and now the suits seem to think that they can replicate the success of the 89 pick by half-stepping and rolling the dice. The worst part is is that the FO has minimized the efficiency and effectiveness of Smitty's career by surrounding him with receivers who are question marks as opposed to exclamation points. This has in turn limited the overall efficiency and effectiveness of our offense for the last few years.

Ironically they have a bandage mentality, but don't believe in getting Band-Aids. Hell, I know old vets like Plax are a quick fix, but why not invest in proven, quality Band-Aids that won't keep falling off until you can come up with a permanent solution?

Don't understand people hating on bringing in a guy who is a HUGE target in the red zone, no matter how old he gets!

Plax is 34yrs old, only a year older than Smitty who we just gave a 3 yr. extension to this offseason. The guy caught 8 TD's last year pretty much all in the red zone or close to it and can still be a deep threat for us.

The only negative I can see to this is he doesn't jell good with this extremely talented offense, but I don't see that happening because this guy wants to be hear and still prove something to people. This team is the perfect format for him to do just that and he knows it. He will understand his role in this offense and if not we have plenty of guys on the Panthers who would remind him of that (Gamble, Smitty, Cam, etc.)

We all know JR's attitude of the Panthers organization against people with some trouble in their past, so if Plax wants to get his ass in a Panthers uniform this year he better try to convince "Big Cat" he's a changed man. If he can do that I do think this deal will happen.

I say if we can get him on the cheap (1.7 mil deal or cheaper) GET IT DONE RIVERA and if someone would have a problem with a player like Plax suiting up for us your crazy!

You do realize Lafell was ruled down at the 1 yard line twice last season. Could have easily had 5 TDs instead of 3. This happened to Smith a lot as well. Lafell also had 1 more yard than Plaxico but with 9 less receptions. About the same amount of receptions as Driver, but with nearly 200 more yards.

I don't understand why you want to downplay Lafell's potential. To say he didn't make any clutch plays last season, I don't get it. Just because you want to be "real".

    • It didn’t feel like we’re the Bills bc we’re not a consistent conference contender yet we’re a rebuilding team. But with the game on the line we played just like the Bills went straight down the field and scored a tuddy then converted a 2pt conversion I have to give credit where credit is due. And the chiefs played us like we were the Bills in an AFC championship game, drive down the field and kicked a walk off FG to win at the end very similar to me. Are saying our defense stunk yesterday? Vs an elite offense team with elite coaching an elite QB man idk what you want them to do. KC does these things to the best defenses in the league consistently to win AFC chips and Super Bowls let’s not devalue who they are. I saw us play KC to the wire and barely lose defense did its thing as much as it could. Bingo!!! We’re also forgetting how injured we’ve been defensively this year, yes we need to build up the D but adding a few pieces and D Browns successful rehab should make us a very strong unit again. Couple that with the offense we saw yesterday and we’re winning our division.
    • Canales deserves a lot of credit. I'm very pleased. He's definitely making strides with Bryce. I also think some of his lack of commitment to Bryce as the starter is to motivate Bryce. I think he liked what he saw when Bryce was benched.  Even the Defense looks tremendously better with just a couple more pieces getting healthy. Wonnum has made our pass rush viable again.  I would love to see this team with one more good player across the defensive front, DT or an edge rusher.
    • I didn’t see any limitations yesterday
