Is it time to give up on Jeff Otah?

how about we wait until the end if his incredibly small remaining contract is up at the end of the year or at least wait until after training camp?

what benefit would we have in letting him go right now?

as most pragmatic posters in this thread have said, it makes no sense whatsoever to cut him any time soon. let his contract run out or to see if someone blows him away in TC.

if he can somehow stay healthy why would you not want him on the team? if you really don't believe that he can stay healthy what would you suggest we do? how would we benefit by cutting him?

I don't endorse keeping him after this year.... but there is ZERO reason to cut him now. A wasted spot is Clausen or AE. People can moan about him taking up a roster spot when those other guys are gone

AE might be a wasted roster spot. However, Right now I cant think of any back up quarterbacks that might possibly be available to us, who know our system as well as Anderson and Clausen do and who the coaches know the capabilities of and can strategize plays around - why would we want to get rid of Clausen at this point when if Cam suffers a major injury , Clausen is the next guy in line after Anderson - hell we dont even know if Anderson will beat clausen out this year for # 2.? Some of you people just dont think logically.

My post came from the perspective of a fan. Clearly we cannot make Marty Hurney cut him but should we mentally write him off as a wasted pick and move on to plan B. Or should I keep my hopes of a big mauling RT that can move DEs off your television screen. It becomes a question of mental health as we've been let down for three straight years.

The Jeff Otah saga makes me sick every time I think about it. We drafted an extremely talented right tackle that should be dominating the league for the next 8 years. Instead we got one brilliant playoff season and 31 missed games.

It's just so hard to let go. With a healthy Otah on the fied the Panthers could take that step from being good to being dominant. Those dry spells brought on by Byron Bell penalties and sacks become touchdown drives. Instead of Cam scrambling for first downs Johnathan Stewart rumbles for them. Jeff is like that girlfriend that you really really want it to work out with but she just keeps gaining weight.

I thought this was Jeff's year. He would come out motivated by a big contract and dominate for 16 games. Instead there are reports he's come in heavy. He has pain in his knee but an MRI reveals no structural damage. This raises the question does he really want it? Is he really a football player? It hurts because we need him. You only get one 1st round pick per season and we used one of ours on him. Jordan Gross will age out soon our next 1st round tackle will be for the left side.

So should we give up? Or should we keep clinging to the memories of 2008? Has Otah given up? In a way this reminds me of Kerry Collins. He took us to the playoffs, broke our hearts. Then a few years later he's in the Super Bowl with the Giants.

You could worry yourself sick about it but it won't make any difference. Luckily none of us have to make the decision and the decision will be made regardless of how much we worry in either direction.

Clausen has no purpose here. He can't even be groomed to replace DA as a backup. Spot is better suited for a young nobody who might fit the scheme for grooming

2/3 of the playbook would have to be taken out (everything that involves the QB running or throwing the ball more than 15 yards) to allow clausen to step in.

he just doesn't fit what the team does.

at least AE has a bit of potential to build on and has somewhat of a skillset that would fit the offense. clausen can't say that.

i'd actually feel better with AE being the 3rd QB in addition to whatever else he can manage to do without screwing up rather than risk clausen stepping up behind center.

i really don't want to see that again.

i'm sure he's a swell guy and a hard worker or whatever, but his time is done here. he has outlasted any usefulness he could have here.

umm no.

mental health is a factor when coming back from injury, especially one that was re-aggravated by coming back from injury too early once before, but JO is not recovering from a mental health problem. He was injured and he is now rehabbing an injury.

As far as personally writing him off, go ahead. Or don't. It does not matter one way or the other what any fan like you or I or anybody else does "personally" All that matters is what he can do and what the Panthers do once he shows exactly that. And, as stated, what is the point in making that decision now? He's under contract and the law has been laid down as far as what he has to produce. What is the point of writing him off before the end of June?
