I was talking to this guy in a bar the other day that's played the lottery his entire life. He won $5,000 one time almost ten years ago. Played every day, at least one ticket, and this was his best score. He was so proud. Until I informed him that if he had simply taken the money he spent every day over the last 35 years and invested $3 each day at a 5% annual return, he would have a bank account with more than $100,000 in it today. It's like buying a ticket every day from age 25 to age 60 and then hitting a $100,000 jackpot right around retirement age. He was pissed. I bought him a beer.
