Steve Smith a Diva?

Recommended Posts

I guess you do have an idea what a diva is, you just don't know Steve Smith. His pouting has never seemed like "I'm not getting my stats" it's "I'm wide open, if Jimmy throws me the ball we score points. If Jimmy doesn't throw me the ball, he's throwing it at the feet of a LB and we don't score points." His tantrums have always seemed like disappointment in the team and other players' effort level, not for selfish reasons. I've never heard him say anything that sounds remotely selfish or diva-like. He is probably the least "me first" receiver in the league. He's all about the team and winning. This offseason for example, I haven't heard him talk about his great season or getting his stats, he's talked about Cam's progression and how the team can get better.

And from everything I've ever read and heard, he helps people that help themselves. He didn't go out of his way for Jarrett because he saw that he was lazy. I've read that he's tried to help others like Armanti and some others (Colbert I think, but might have been another). He just doesn't seem like the most approachable person on the team and that is probably a barrier. That's just a personality type, not being a diva.

Smitty has always been pretty much a jerk.....maybe mellowed some in age but he isn't this class act the huddle paints him as. Actions speak louder than words.

He didn't help Armanti. It is on record Armanti politely advised Steve Smith was too busy to aid out 3 new rookie WRs and they got coaching from Dwayne Jarrett instead. Smitty has doing his own thing jogging with OLman.

Steve has been a jerk in Carolina. He is a badass so it is okay.

I think Smith has done a decent job of putting up with a career's worth of back up and rookie quarterbacks. His competitive fires burn bright and he definitely has anger issues. Still he has never reached his potential given who has been throwing the ball. BTW, one of the people they mentioned was a diva was Jerry Rice. I don't see with Rice and I don't see it with Smith.

Most of his career he was catching balls from Delhomme/Cam talent.... That aint backup play. I'll give you 09 but that's it from Jake. Jake to Smitty was a great connection for a span. People downplay Jake pre Tommy John. He was a good QB

diva?

one nfl mouth talking about another? pretty funny.

I don't think there is a possibility for any of these guys to get to where they are mentally or physically without having an inflated self-image. It's part of the psyche. These are not type-A guys. By the time they get NFL jerseys and then earn a start... over several years these are type-AAAAA people.

Not only do they believe they are the biggest guy in the room they know they have to believe it or it simply won't be true.

diva is technically an accurate description if you compare them to you and I, but you have to compare these guys to their peers only.

If Smith is a diva what is TO? I am not going to defend the guy because he is a hot head and on the verge of explosion. However that fault is part of his success on the field too. A big part.

TO is a poor measure. He is the uber diva and not a representation of your standard diva WR.

You won't see Megatron behaving like Smitty has....Megatron isn't a diva. Smitty is in the diva class....

The entire Panthers organization has always acknowledged Steve was Steve and required his own unique handling.

wouldn't call him a diva, wonder why this even came up other than he must have said something to hurt his poor lil feelings

Anyone an organization makes there own rules for and handles with kid gloves is a diva....all divas aren't the same. He is more a problem child WR than a true diva....the problem childs fall under diva

Smith played for Peete, Delhomme for several years, Moore, Carr, Clausen and Newton. Of those guys only Jake,Peete, and Carr were not rookies. Peete and Carr were backup quality while here and Jake was good but not particularly accurate or a great passer. The offense was predictable and unimaginative at best. Smith played on teams that were run first and pass when you had to in order to move the ball until last year.

Hardly the kind of offense that would typically make you a top receiver or showcase your talents. Yet Smitty rarely complained and instead became a fierce blocker and did whatever he could to help the team. You ever see TO or Ocho Cinco run across the field to block for his teammate????

Yeah, me neither.

Bulk of Smitty's career was still Jake/Cam. Don't care if Cam was a rookie....he has ja decent QB play overall. Andre Johnson, Megatron....they all have played with slop too. Not everyone gets a Brady/Manning every year. Irrelevant IMO focusing on Smitty's QB play in this topic.

Smith often complains. He often has created tensions and been the OPPOSITE of the ideal teammate. He had his own style. Again, you don't have to be TO to be a diva.

Steve Smith has been a much worse teammate than an Ochocinco....at least with the info available to us.

As long as Smitty remains a badass....it doesn't matter.

Yeah who thinks quarterback has anything to do with how a wide receiver performs............

Seriously??????????

You obviously have a problem with Smith but apparently the team doesn't. Anyone who thinks that Ocho Cinco is a better teammate than Smith doesn't know what they are talking about. Are you just trying to win an argument or do you actually believe what you posted???

This is about being a diva....

Focusing on QB play production is getting off track if that is your focus.

I have no issue with Smitty....but call a spade and spade.

Ochocinco is a great lockerroom guy.

Ochocinco has not punched a reported 3 teammates

Ochocinco hasnt had a lockerroom have a team meeting and voiced they all walk on egg shells around him.

Steve Smith has not been an ideal teammate or lockerroom guy over his career.....that is just dumb. Ochocinco easily has been a better teammate. That doesn't mean he is a better WR than Smith

Hardly a good teammate. If he is so great why is he looking for his third team and out of football while Smith will retire a Panther?

Better teammate than Smith overall theoughout their careers. Not really debatable....can link countless articles to that. No point.

He is looking for another team bc he isn't a great WR anymore...Steve is. All Chad is until proven otherwise is a sideshow act at this stage.

Diva's a female term originally applied to opera singers. Prima donna's a more unisex term these days, although it's female based too.

The dictionary meaning- "a vain or undisciplined person who finds it difficult to work under direction or as part of a team."

Anybody who says Smith is undisciplined and can't work as a team player is nuts, so he's not a diva or a prima donna. TO, on the other hand....
