Tolbert came here partly because he likes the South better than California

I've traveled quite extensively and loved San Diego. You should also check out Portland and SLC.

But I love Charlotte more than those three

If you are looking for cool places with nice people.

The nicest people I've ever met were in Africa.

South Africa, Mozambique, Tanzania, Rwanda, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Malawi, Botswana, Namibia.....all of it made me realize what actually being friendly and generous and hospitable means. People with next to nothing will absolutely insist that they provide you with a meal or place to stay because you are a guest and they just want to learn about where you are from. The poor will give you their last bit of food and the rich will give you their vacation houses to use. It's unreal.

After being in all those place I find that people are more alike than different once you get past a few cultural things on the surface. So when I look at another region I try not to stereotype and just enjoy what it is about the area that is unique.

Portland seems cool, I've never been there but I've heard good things about the people. I've met two people from Portland, one was beyond weird, the other was cool. The weather would turn me off though.

My wife was born in Michigan and lived in MiAmi for 16 years. It took her awhile to get used to cashiers at the grocery store engaging her in polite conversation. I travel a sh*t ton and pretty much love every city and town I visit. My "north" smack talk is just smack talk. Even the people of Montreal blew away the stereotype of being assholes. I was born and raised in Wilmington and lived in Florida (northern and southern), I have no desire to live anywhere other than the Charlotte area.

Unless all these damned Yankees continue to swarm.

I have.

Not as bad as down here, but not exactly comfortable either. The temp gets fairly high.

Winter is the time you really don't want to be in Ohio though (yikes).

As to the prior discussions, I'll echo that you can find Saints* and jerks pretty much everywhere.

My experience spending a lot of time in Louisville is that I will take Summer in the South and not think twice about it. IMO it's not even close to the misery index of the midwest in the Summer.
