Why we should NOT draft Drummond

Recommended Posts

Seeing a lot of people throwing Drummond's name around like he should be our guy.

Obviously, the Bobcats need to focus on being more competitive. The last thing we need is a project big who has been known for lacking a competitive drive since gaining national recognition as a #1 overall HS prospect.

We, just as any other team, should be attracted to his size and athleticism. There may even be a few teams early lottery that can afford to gamble with this kid. But we simply can not risk bringing him in and watching him stand around looking like he has no idea he's in the game or if he even cares.

If you've honestly watched him play before then you know that every spurt of spirited focused play will undoubtedly be followed by long stretches of seemingly lost or apathetic "standing around." I think that 9 times out of ten when a prospect shows that lack of drive its just part of their make up.

Kid could make a great player one day. Charlotte is just a terrible fit at the time.

My logic for Drummond's issues at UCONN is that he is still very young and obviously needs nurturing and time to grow up. Also, he played at UCONN under a coach that was there one day and gone the other.

I believe he cares and enjoys the game but sometimes lacked consistency from leadership positions within the team resulting in inconsistent play and/or drive.

I believe a player's success is equally tied to thier talent/drive as well as the environment or organization they play for/in.

The 'Cats had success in molding Kwame Brown into a contributer who everyone thought was lost for good. If Cho and the new coaching staff draft him it is because they believe they can provide stability and development. If Biz can come in and have the impact he did I would expect Drummond to be able to adjust similarly.

All that being said...idk if I take Drummond at 2. If the 'Cats trade back and draft him in the mid lottery I would be completely okay with it.

just my .02

Read some of his high school and aau evaluations and they are along the same lines as what you are excusing him for based on circumstances at uconn. Regardless the circumstances here may not be much better here than there.

I fear we'd set each other back even further.

Not what we need imo.

I dont think Drummond has any buisness going top 5. He just isnt talented enough right now to play in the NBA- he has virtually no offensive game, doesnt rebound well, and is quite possibly the worst shooter I've ever seen (less than 30% from the free throw line). He has all the physical tools in the world, yet showed virtually no improvement in college.

He wont become even a decent NBA player unless he puts in a lot of work, and nothing I've seen from him makes me think that will happen. Maybe he figures it out at some point, but I certainly wouldnt bet the 2nd pick on it happening

I like Drummond for 3 reason

1. He's young and explosive and already has a NBA body. I see him developing into a Deandre Jordan- Bynum type with the right coaching.

2. We need a C and have for a long time now. And Look at the FA list our C won't come from there.

3. If he and Biz can Develop we could have the youngest and most dominate front court in the east. There are only 2 legit C in the east. We would be a top team if both these guys can reach their potential.

And If you saw Bynum in highschool or his 1st 2 season in the league you would have said the same things about him.

Now look at him.

Exactly why I wouldnt have a problem taking that risk with a lower pick (Bynum went 10th I believe)- at some point that risk becomes worth it. Not when you're picking 2nd overall

Bynum actually showed more maturity and effort at that age too- if I remember correctly he was pretty overweight in high school and put a lot of work in to get into shape before he came into the NBA

This kid is way better then Bynum was at the same age. And at some point this team is going to have to take a risk. This team has always taken the safe pick and look how that turned out.

Morrison when they should have taken Gay.

DJ when they should have taken Lopez.

Felton and May when they should have traded up for CP3.

The panthers did and look how that turned out.

What doesn Bynum being a crappy player at 18 have to do with anything? Bynum at least showed improvement, which I havent seen from Drummond. Also they arent similar players at all- Bynum is a traditional back to the basket center, less athletic than Drummond but a good 3 inches taller too. I would be surprised if Drummond turned out better than Deandre Jordan

The main issue I have with taking Drummond though is the many other talented players that we could take instead. Why risk it on a kid who might not care about basketball?

The point is at 18 you wouldn't have wanted Bynum either. The only reason you have seen improvement in Bynum is he 24. You didn't see the improvement at 18. Maybe at 24 you can see the same improvement in Drummond.

Also he can develop his back to the basket game. But what makes him better then Bynum was at 18 is he has a face up game, he can run the floor, and he's more athletic then Bynum was and is now.
