Building Off "Wrinkles to the Offense" CSR Presents: "Playing With Power"

it may not be overly unique or new or creative or innovative, but it's something we couldn't necessarily run very effectively with wharton at LG and brockel at FB (he was our starting fullback, right?) the point of the article is that adding silatolu and tolbert opens up these types of formations for us to be effective with.

often heavy passing teams have lacked a good running game, or a good defense, or both (see: Saints* up until 2009) and then hit another level entirely when they got one or both. we're about to have an outstanding passing offense as well as a power running game worthy of the jets or san francisco or the 2008 carolina panthers, and an improving defense on top of that. bitches better watch out.

Actually there are a lot of plays that we executed last year that were tons more creative and inventive. Here is a TD by Williams on a option toss play where the action goes the other direction that is a lot more interesting and something we didn't do that much in the past.

Notice how the initial action goes in the other direction led by the fullback and Newton. Williams makes one step to the right and then circles back left and Newton tosses him the ball on a naked sweep to the backside where Williams outruns the pursuit to the corner and takes it to the house. I will be glad to X and O it for those who need more than a video, but that play is a lot more creative than a zone sweep to the outside which is old as the hills.

I can give you a tons of those...................

Before we start talking about what Silatolu and Tolbert can do, perhaps they can at least take a snap or two. Tolbert actually has not done that much fullback work and is not known as a lead blocker. He has done it some but his value last year was as a banger type back and receiver out of the backfield not as a lead blocker. As for Silatolu he hasn't even won the left guard position yet, seems a might too optimistic.

As for Brockel leading and Wharton pulling, they were pretty effective given that we led the league for most yards running over the right end position where is where this play happens. Unless it was all about Bell and nothing else.

Well if Amini pans out like Hurney and Rivera hope, I think when he pulls he will maul the man he's blocking all the way to the ground, not just push him to open a hole for the RB, and allow him to stay in the play and tackle the RB 25 yards down the field. So that should be pretty fun to watch over and over again on my DVR. Again like p55 said, it's not certain, but that's why he was drafted in the first place.

I hope Amini is a beast out there and his supposed mean streak is totally true. Still it is optimistic at best to assume he will dominate his rookie year. After all Gross and Kalil are all pros but they did not dominate their rookie years either.

    • Strange, every news article and tweet I just searched all mentioned waivers. It is definitely his sixth year of at least 6 games. All I was trying to think of earlier was at the vet min could he beat out Bryce in camp next year lol. He's kinda got the old Darnold issue where he can obviously launch deep balls and qb run at a level Bryce will never achieve, but it sounds like he would be content being like a Josh Allen backup who doesn't throw the whole game plan out the window if he has to come in for a series or two. If we had him and for some reason still wanted to start Bryce he would kinda do what Justin Fields was doing the other night with Dangeruss, coming in for designed runs and maybe some play action/triple option rpo things to go deep. That would be so obvious and sad though. At least Russ can still sling it 40 yards in the air with a flick of the wrist
    • Too late to edit above but the quote is from this Diane Russini article in the Athletic: https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/5941684/2024/11/23/russinis-what-im-hearing-the-day-the-jets-fell-apart-and-the-broncos-rallied-belichick-best-fits/ Okay.. there you have sorry I left that out the first post.  Also waivers keep the contract intact. That is the major difference in released and waived. It's all in that link from the other post.
    • Okay so I am reading something in The Athletic and it says that Jones had to pass through waivers. So I don't know. I looked this stuff up when we were number one there all offseason and I thought it said 4 years in the league got you vested, as they call it.  Vested gets you out of waivers as I understood it. I probably got something wrong, but when I think about the slack quality of journalism these days I wonder about that. So I went and looked, again. Well, well.  For everyone: "When a player has accrued at least four seasons in the NFL, they are considered a vested veteran. When these vested veterans get cut, they are released and their contract is terminated. When a vested veteran is released, they are an unrestricted free agent that can sign with any NFL team, and the team that released them doesn’t need to provide any additional compensation." It runs it all down here, where the quotes came from: https://www.profootballnetwork.com/waived-vs-released-nfl/ As far as Jones, the team turned down his 5th year option so I knew that meant he had 4 years in, because they re-signed him anyway, after turning down the much cheaper extra year.  The Athletic is owned by the New York Times so I shouldn't be surprised. That paper was an institution once upon a time but they let their standards go.
