Way-Too-Early 2009 Standings Predictions

Recommended Posts

some people feel good about calling a glass half empty. it gives them comfort. they don't have to deal with the pain of defeat if they constantly feel defeated.

they can't handle the possibility of falling down to earth after flying high so they spend their whole life on the ground feeling "grounded".

i'm just glad the team doesn't look at it like that. any team that ever does has no chance of success. there's lots of optimism about what the team feels it can do after last year and especially after the way it ended and i have no reason to tell them they shouldn't. i'm going to enjoy looking at the potential and feeling that they can come back stronger. i'm sure that they prefer fans who believe that they can win it all next year as well.

saying that they are slaves to past trends is small thinking. when you say that they will have another down year because they have down years after good years in the past is making them slaves to the past. i don't think they feel entrapped or are intimidated by this coming years schedule. they will be going into that season feeling that they can come out on top. they will go into each game, regardless of who it is, and feel that they can win.

if they don't feel that way then why bother? i just don't see any reason in not feeling optimistic about next year. their strength was not an illusion. their record was not an aberration. their chances of going 10-6 or better and winning the superbowl are far from out of reach. i don't want to pull for a team that doesn't feel they can make it and i don't think teams want fans who don't think that they can.

In that case should the Detroit Lion fans beleive they are going to have a winning season next year? Or are they not real fans like you are?

they need to believe that they can have a year like the dolphins or falcons did.

they have to believe that they can overcome the obstacles that lie ahead. the only way that they will be able to do this is if they can fight through and be much more than what they were last year. the fans have to believe that they can do this. bags over the heads? who wants to play for a team that has fans do that kind of thing? players feed off the fans. if the lions players and fans don't think they are going to have a good year they most likely aren't. they stand a much greater chance of success if they believe that they can. you can't win if you don't think that you can.

perspective sets the tone.

We're talking about the fans not the players. I agree that if you are going to play in the NFL that you need to beleive you're going to win every game. But do you really think Detroit Lion fans beleive they are going to the playoffs next year? And since they dont are they any less of a fan for not having unrealistic goals?

No I really think that the fans of the Detroit Lions believe they are going to the playoffs next year. Or at least a majority of them. Same with fans of the Seahawks, the Raiders, the 49'ers, the Cowboys, the Broncos, etc.

i'm talking about fans as well...the twelfth man

why shouldn't they believe they have a shot? why shouldn't the believe they could have a winning schedule? playoffs might seem out of reach but it isn't impossible. plus, for them, a successful season would be 8-8.

whether you want to think so or not...the fans set the tone for the players when they go out on that field. the players will also set the tone for the fans by their play. they feed off each other. teams who have fans that believe in them have a much greater chance at winning.

this happens at games but it also happens outside the stadiums. negative feelings towards what they are doing will often feed the players in a negative way. sometimes they overcome, sometimes they are overcome.

i'm not saying that they are not real fans if they don't have faith, but they are the types of fans i wouldn't want to have. would you want to have people yelling at you and telling you that you can do it, feeding the positive attitude and optimism that you have or would you want people yelling at you or simply saying, "don't bother...this year is too tough for you. i don't think you are going to make it." any optimism that you have will start turning to doubts if you are like most people. you have enough people doubting you or questioning your ability to succeed and you will eventually do the same to yourself.

I dont think there is a single Detroit Lions fan that honeslty beleives that. They beleive their team will improve but they do not have any high expectations for them in 2009. You're only fooling yourself if you beleive that. And the rest of the teams you mentioned could very easily make the playoffs except for maybe the raiders.

They pay their money they can say or beleive whatever they want. Go to a game in Philly or New york. They have some of the most negative fans in the world even when they're winning but those teams are still successful despite the negativity from the fans. The fans do not win games the players do. We have the quiestest stadium in the league and our team still went 8-0 at home last year. If the fans determined the out come of games then we would likely have finished 0-8 at home last year with the fairweather fans that we have.

Like I said, I beleive anything is possible. Yes The panthers could go 10-6. Am I expecting them to? No Im not for the reasons I've already given you. But I'll still be at every game cheering them on. If they exceed my expectations then GREAT! If not I wasnt expecting much. Not to knock you off your high horse, but it doesnt make you any better of a fan because your expectations were higher.

What about the etc.'s? I'm not sure about their chances.:D

Also, I believed in the Panthers in '02. So I can understand why they would believe in the Lions in '09.
