Sherrod Martin is starting free safety in OTAs; splitting snaps a possibility?

A lot of players make big jumps between years 2 and 3. Not saying its definitively going to happen, but its petty and uncharacteristic of a good fan to openly root against a player to not succeed.

That would mean Martin's should have happened last year.

I am confused with all this Martin at CB. What has he done to warrant that, missing open tackles? Competition won't truly start till TC and both are hungry, I see Nakamura beating out Martin for the job and being the starting FS.

I wouldn't like them splitting time at FS. FS isn't built for switching players in and out IMO.

Martin alone gave up like 4 TDs against the Saints**** in week 17.

At 0:58, Martin blocked Godfrey from making a tackle. (Saints**TD)

At 1:28, who knows what Martin was doing? He wasn't playing defensive back. (Saints* TD)

2:24, Martin out of position again (Saints* TD)

At 3:14, Martin got owned by Graham, but he could have made an effort to pop the ball out. (Saints* TD)

Godfrey isn't far better than Martin. Godfrey has been the worst starting S in the NFL over the last 4 years. Everyone else playing that poorly has been benched. And if you are going to say Godfrey has been the worst over the last 4 years..... You would need to name a starting S worse over that time span

Martin's regression had more to do with coaching than talent. Defensive Backs / passing defense coordinator Wilks hopefully is up to the task of improving the secondary this season.

Competition is good and brings out the best in everyone. If Martin is starting then he is the best guy and deserves to start. It means he will have shown improvement and deserves the job. After all for most of us, it isn't about the player so much as the position. As long as we are getting good free safety play, who cares who is actually back there if the job is getting done at a high level.

I will just agree to disagree. Godfrey first 1 1/2 years were horrible.. after coming back from injury when Sherrod Martin came in for him he played much better. Perhaps sitting down and watching from sidelines helped. I have the NFL game pass and wish I could do video editing to show you how horribly out of position Sherrod Martin has been for the past 2 years. His initial play when he took over for Martin has basically given him a pass. Godfrey makes mistakes but most of his aren't out the out of position clueless mistakes Martin makes. On this forum it's like Godfrey mistakes gets multiplied by 3 and Martins dived by 3. So Godfrey is makes mistakes but is rarely out of position, Martin is consistently our of position and makes mistakes. Martin made Richard Marshall look a lot worse than he actually was.

That being said, physically he has all the tools. I think he could be a good player. But using the last 2 years .... Martin has been a lot worse than Godfrey imo. Not saying that Marshall can't be better, it's just not on the field.

This. Whomever plays the best should be on the field. Neither Godfrey or Martin has done enough to guarantee playing time.

That doesnt mean jack squat man. It's called TIP DRILL, anyone could have made that catch. To say, off that play, he should get a shot at CB is ludicrous. He is not good anywhere on the field, maybe Special Teams. Martin is garbage and I'm praying he is not our FS come week 1.
