Carolina Panthers’ big-hitter Sherrod Martin faces contenders

Recommended Posts

i don't care who plays safety as long as they can get the job done.

i feel good that we've got wilkos in here now. i think he'll be able to make the secondary respectable. if that includes godfrey and martin still in there, fine. if one or both of them get replaced, i'm fine with that as well. i just don't care about anything except getting better.

Nah let's argue about who's worse it's more fun! (sarcasm). If I had to guess Haruki is strictly a ST's player who can spell, his former coach said as much. Now Reggie Smith is interesting and has a better chance to start over Martin if it comes to that (he's a former DB to S convert as well).

Martin's strength is coverage despite 2011 going wrong. Godfrey's is popping people coming up to play the run. Arguing that is ridiculous.

Best analysis I've read in this whole thread.

All I know is that I want to see Nakamura take the field. Dude is a Judo champion. That must translate well to the game.

Wasn't arguing who is worse. Just that we need improved S play.....not just improved play from Martin

Ill be happy that Pugh will not be on the field in our 3 saftey sets. As for the Martin, Godfrey debate...when Martin took over for Harris, everybody was saying he's going to be great " the next Ed Reed" and he played well in 10'. Godfrey didn't play so well in 10' and everyone was calling for him to be replaced. Now in 11' Martin looked bad and Godfrey look ok. Hopefully they both get it together this year. Competition should help.

I just remember the last new Orleans game when they had Godfrey on Jimmy Graham...he wasn't catching anything and Godfrey made a beautiful knockdown accross his body. But they had to take Godfrey off him because everyone else was getting burned and started to play him as a more traditional deep safety....then Graham started to light it up

This is going to be an interesting competition battle because I think that stat wise, these guys are fairly comprable.

Comb Tot Ast Sck PDef Int TDs Yrds FF

Martin 68 50 18 0 11 3 0 16 0

Goldshon 65 55 12 0 15 6 0 53 1 (49'ers Starter: more Int's + yrds)

Ed Reed 52 44 8 1 8 3 0 25 1

Nakamura 5 12 10 2 2 0 0 0 0 (15 gms, no starts)

But these are just stats, I've seen Martin on the field and he whiffs on key plays. We'll see....

Ed Reed? Wow.
