Carolina Panthers’ big-hitter Sherrod Martin faces contenders

Recommended Posts

If you have ever watched Godfrey play you would know its not craptastic. He has trouble covering NOs TEs but many have. Dude had some great coverage last year and does not miss many tackles. Prob why no one is saying he sucks besides you.

Godfrey was the 79th rated S in 2011 per PFF.

Godfrey had more missed tackles than Martin.

PFF says he sucked overall worse than Martin last year and has been one of the worst tacklers at S since he arrived in the league.

Martins biggest problem was he was out of position a whole LOT! His second problem was he didn't tackle very well. Still believe it or not Jordan Pugh found a way to be way worse. If you want to write a handbook about how not to play Safety in the NFL watch him.

And that's why IMO you draft S's in the draft that played S in college, and not try to convert college DB's to S in the NFL, can it work yes, Godfrey IMO has been solid. But being that last line of defense and sticking your nose in there isn't something a lot of corners are used to doing. Not saying he can't, but wondering if he has the S mentality being a former DB.

That's nice, but how does BAMF feel about him is more important to me.

Martin was a S at Troy...Godfrey was converted.

And pretty much everyone knows that PFF has so many flaws its not funny.

Martin was a S at Troy...Godfrey was converted.

He was a DB on our roster as a rookie, Chris Harris and Godfrey were the Safeties. Then when Chris left, Martin moved to FS, and Godfrey slid over to SS.

I agree he played some S at Troy, but for us originally he was projected to be a DB/Nickel. Here's some reference...so I think it's safe to say we were both right.

Over the next couple weeks an inferior site will provide in-depth analysis of each of the Panthers recent drafts and select UDFA's. This post will focus on 2nd round pick DB Sherrod Martin.

http://www.catscratc...pick-evaluation

Round 2, Pick 27 (59) Sherrod Martin S 6'1" 198 Troy Combine 40 Time: 4.52

Upside: Grade B

The upside of this pick is Martin fills the immediate need for a nickel corner, the result of the move of former nickel corner Richard Marshall to an outside CB spot. Martin brings versatility to the defensive backfield in that he has played CB, nickel corner and most recently safety. I have found nothing but glowing reports on this guy particularly this one at Draft Countdown. This analysis has all the adjectives you want in a DB... great speed and acceleration...fluid hips...very physical...excellent tackler...good range...nice hands. You get a real good sense of his hands in this video where he picks off a pass that was deflected.

I bring info to support my stance.... like in my post above.

For example, PFF rates him as the 79th best S.....random Godfrey supporter then makes up false claims he rarely misses tackles. Trolling is making up bs. Godfrey supporters are the ones bringing false and misleading info.

Kid has talent. HORRIBLE S. He isn't a S.

With some is their evaluations yes. Godfrey can't tackle and is horrible with coverage assignments.

You said he rarely misses tackles. Since when?

And Charles Godfrey still flies under the radar with his craptastic play

I picked up a copy of the Linde sports NFL preview issue at the airport yesterday. They had annonymous scout reviews of each team. Godfrey scored some praise.

So they are flawed unless we are talking about Godfrey? Seems like good logic.

Yes I know we drafted him to play corner. But he played almost exclusively at saftey in college. He didnt transition from saftey to corner tho. He was a saftey in college and is a safety in the pros. In your original quote you said: that's why you draft a S to play S...we did because Martin was a safety in college.
