Greg Hardy primed for a breakout year.

Kinda surprised his weight got up that high. I remember as a rookie they made him start running with the receivers because he was smoking all the linemen in sprints. For some reason I thought he was on the lighter side of DEs when we got him (but I was comparing him to Peppers, which is kind of unfair because Peppers is just... so damn big). 275-280 is probably ideal for him.

Last year I thought he played very well. His run containment was rather poor, but he would sometimes beat his man off the line and make tackles in the backfield, so his overall run defense wasn't the worst (he could still learn a thing or two from CJ). On passing plays I felt he did real well. He rarely closed in for sacks but between him and CJ they seemed to almost always win on the edge but QBs had plenty of room to step up.

If he's really putting the work in I think he'll be pretty destructive. Dude is a natural athlete, has great size and speed and when he's in shape he's generally really well conditioned. I never see him take plays off on the field (could be a different story for practice though).

Question:

If Hardy doesn't break out this year, would you consider him a bust? Or just an average player?

If he does not "break out" this year,I would still consider him a damn serviceable DE and still and absolute steal in the 6th round. 6th round picks are certified scrub territory.

Serviceable is one thing. We could rotate in three different serviceable DE's all game and still not generate a pass rush. I guess what I'm wondering is, if Hardy only produces in the 3-5 sack range again, Alexander's potential production not witstanding, is DE a need for us in FA or next year's draft?

How can you consider a 6th round pick a bust? I don't understand that..

Any time expectations for a player are high, they can either meet them or bust. Exhibit A is this thread. I didn't mean he'd be a bust as a 6th round draft pick, rather will he be a bust based on this hype?

I suppose by serviceable I mean average and generating some pressure on the qb, not a pro bowl guy who dominates, but a guy who does good enough to garner a decent amount of snaps. If he does not get better I would call him a very good backup player and look for someone else to play the first unit. At this point some of the hype is overblown, with false expectations for a 6th rounder. If he never becomes dominant or a 10 sack guy, I feel as though I would still never label him as a bust.

A bust is someone that's in the 1st or second round. There's no such thing as a 6th round bust. You don't put as much emphasis on lower round prospects as 1st and second rounders. If anything he's a diamond in the rough and he's been that for his career. He's put up decent numbers in two years.

You want a bust? Jeff Otah is a bust. Greg Hardy is at worst case a rotational guy. Pass rushing by committee isn't bad.

Our defense really needs the D line to step it up big time and Hardy could be a big factor in making that happen. He has shown flashes of talent in his first two years, and needs to develop consistency to become a truly productive DE. As said earlier in this thread a little push from the interior of the line could make his job a little easier. Hopefully with return of Ron Edwards and the development of our rookies (who were terrible last year) the DT situation will improve. If Rivera believes in them I do as well. If this happens there is a very real possibility that our defense will improve dramatically. We have one of the best linebacking cores in the league, along with an elite shut down corner in Gamble. So heres to watching our D run train on the rest of the NFC South next season.

I think he is primed for a much better year.I agree that he was all so close at getting a significant number of sacks.I am certain the accident slowed him up last year.He does need to improve his gap discipline against the run.If he is going to break out this should be the year.
