Blackmon dui

Recommended Posts

I hate hearing when a young man with everything going for him does something stupid to mess up his life like this.

Especially hate it because of this story: Justin Blackmon has a very special fan

During the draft, ESPN interviewed Blackmon and this little girl. She was shy (he spoke for her some) but when they asked her if she had a particular team she wanted to see him go to, she first said no, but then amended "I don't want you to go somewhere far away".

I was touched by the story and wished him success for her sake as much as his own.

Now this. Ugh :(

Almost every team has a driving service available for their players and the NFLPA has a driving service in every NFL city for current and retired players I think.

True, but what are the unwritten ramifications of using such a service?

I am not casting stones, but how many people out there die due to people drinking and driving? If someone wants to be an alcoholic at home and not put anyone in danger so be it, but once you put innocent people's lives at stake by driving drunk you really do not deserve too much sympathy. They obviously have no sympathy for the people they are endangering. I agree he needs help, but do not agree he deserves sympathy....

But if he was a Saint, Buc, or Falcon you would enjoy their pain and suffering right?

Probably less than the ramifications of getting a DUI.

Easy to say a a middle age guy with a life of experience. As a 21 year old just entering a work force? LIke I said, easy to cast judgement, more difficult to practice understanding. Like most things, the more difficult is probably the wiser.

No idea, but not sure why there would be one? I guess if you were getting picked up from a less than desirable location/business or seemed to be using it 3-4 times a week there might be an issue. Like calling for one from Patty's House of Prostitutes might get you called into the Head Coach's office on Monday morning I suppose.

Yeah but its fun to pile on these athletes who make more $$$, are more celebrated, and have a higher place in society than us. This is our way to pay them back and vent about that. Thats why these threads go 6-7 pages, and a Ryan Leaf thread cant make it to 2. Passing judgement on athletes like Blackmon is the only thing we're consistently good at.

I don't think it's "fun" at all. Its asinine for anyone to drive a vehicle with that amount of alcohol in their system. It is especially asinine for someone with access to nearly unlimited resources to do it. It just shows how little many of these athletes respect the fans that allow them to make this kind of $$.

No one talks about Ryan Leaf, because he isn't relevant. Much like I'm not going to discuss one of my friends getting a DUI with you. I will discuss it with people it is relevant to. Much like I discuss Blackmon's DUI with people that his actions are relevant to (NFL fans).

Not for this.

It's one thing to do dumbass stunts like the Saints* pulled with their bounty program. That's just the game (although you could argue consequences beyond the game if they hurt someone).

This stuff is real life, and it doesn't hurt the fans near as much as it hurts him, or the kids that look up to him (like the little girl in the story).

Is it his own fault? Yep, and the consequences will be his alone, and he'll deserve them. Still, it's a sad thing to see happen. But it could have been much worse. What if someone had been hurt or killed?

I'm not casting. I think it's sad, especially given the story posted above.

But it's his responsibility, and while young, he's old enough to understand that you don't drive drunk or impaired.

Had he used a service like the one JR mentioned, I'd actually have considered that good judgment and something to be admired because it would have kept him from having a DUI. And I think plenty of others would agree on that.

This though? Nobody wins here.

I hate it for him, but no matter how sympathetic you are, you can't excuse him from the consequences of something like this. Especially true knowing that things had the potential to be worse, much worse. Just be glad he didn't get himself or someone else killed.

The kid made a dumb ass decision and will pay for it. I'm just wondering why cant it be left at that. Why do we have to make broad statements about athletes because of what 1 does? Ryan Leaf got arrested twice THIS YEAR and it was a story, but I didnt see people here trying to make sweeping generalizations about it, or use his troubles to stand on a self righteous soap box like we see here.

I can understand how someone with a history of drinking as a flag on his personality would not want to inform his employer that he is currently blitzed. Dumb decision, yes. Its almost as if he made the decision while intoxicated.

Pretty sure he's not the only Jaguars player who drinks, or gets drunk. And he could have taken steps to prevent this sort of thing from happening prior to getting drunk.

Ya gotta admit the consequences for just getting drunk wouldn't have been near as bad as they will be for this.

And just for context, I felt sorry for Dwayne Jarrett for screwing up his life too. But again, these guys are old enough to know better.
