Headline Tag: J-Stew Wants to Remain a Panther

Recommended Posts

Per Rotoworld.com:

Jonathan Stewart, who's entering a contract year, says he is interested in signing a long-term extension with the Panthers.

"I definitely hope things work out," Stewart said. "I want to be back. I think we have a lot of weapons on offense and we can be a dangerous team." Beat writer Steve Reed reports that the Panthers "wanted to extend Stewart's contract earlier this offseason," and they've reportedly "not given up hope." Whether the Panthers will be able to execute the maneuver is another story. They overpaid DeAngelo Williams last offseason, and are now tight up against the salary cap.

I know J-Stew's basically just saying the "right things" at this time because who would say they want to leave the team they play on right now, but the bolded part at the end is what I believe will make Stewart impossible to re-sign. I assume he believes his capabilities are on par or above D-Will, and after having seen his contract, how could he possibly remain here?

Their situation is sort of like a teacher salary, in that they're both doing the same thing and the younger guy might even be better but the other guy's got the experience and hit his contract at the right time (after the lockout when the owner was being called a cheapskate).

I'd love for this guy to stay, but you'd have to be crazy to think Tolbert was only brought in to be a fullback. He's an option for carries if Stewart doesn't return.

Here's to hoping he stays! And if not, then I hope he gets paid!

i believe him and i believe the team wants him back. they'll get something done and the panthers will be better for it.

with this 4 headed monster of newton, williams, stewart, and tolbert along with smitty, olsen, and the rest of the WRs this is going to be one killer offense. these guys are just going to pummel defenses into oblivion.

If we were to extend J-stew, we'd definitely be in cap hell down the road. I don't know how we could pull this off.

it would only be tough for a couple seasons. if things are clicking with who they have they won't have a need to go out and spend a lot of money. no sense in having a ton of cap room if you aren't going to use it. i think this team is on the brink of being one of the most dominant teams without adding much more.

i'm not worried.

Which is why I'm still worried, Cam's contract is up in 3 years.

We've been over this a million times and it always ends the same way. With people crying about which one they like more or a select few trying to argue that having a 100 million dollar backfield is practical.

In the unlikely scenario they find a buyer for Williams, that's the route you take. If not, then you bite the bullet and move on. Yes, it will suck to see the national media suddenly take notice of Stewy's "magical improvement" once he goes to a team they like, but it will suck worse when we can't address any needs because we are dishing out the big bucks to a position that just doesn't require it.

D'lol and Tolbert would still be a good 1-2 punch.

All that said, knowing Hurney, we will probably give Stewy a massive contract and then draft Marcus Lattimore in the first next year.

i figure every year there will be one or two players with a gigantic cap hit. a team trying to win will have that happen, imo. it's not that big of a deal.

We will use the franchise tag on Cam before letting him get signed in free agency.

That's not my point though, the point is that we still need enough cap for a long-term deal for Cam when that time arises. Not many players play under the tag. I'm sure JR and Hurney are gonna want to sign cam to a BIG long-term deal.

JR and Hurney are cap "gods" there is no reason to worry about something that is still a little ways down the road.

They will figure something out.
