Anyone Going to Training Camp?

I live walking distance.

Depends on your level of football acumen on whether you will enjoy it, or love it. If you love the nuts and bolts, get a good umbrella, a thick blanket, and a thermos of water and sit down at the fence. Look for a handful of guys down at the fence. That could be us. If you want action, it can be hit and miss. Because you never know whether they post the full schedule or just the practice schedule.

I am not sure how you can get lost near the fields and wind up in peril? Unless you ran into any of my inlaws at night. Just do not go east on foot from the fields and you should be golden.

It is damm near an hour from the field to downtown Gville. There are literally 20 good places to stay closer to the fields. Unless your standards are all that, you should be fine in Flag City. Hell, you can stay at the College Inn and walk through the campus to practice. I can help, but only if you truly want the help.

Or Panther-Lover has even more info than I do. So do not let a lack of info get in the way of a great experience.

I have never had a bad practice. Cuz everything they do is important. And I do not feel entitled just because I have been to more practices than most. It is just a lucky break for me.

Spartanburg is a great place to visit. Do not let the unenlighted few fill your head with their nonsense.

Short stroy long. My giddy got carried away. And GOOOOOOOO CATS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

I have a good listing of places to stay and things to do and look out for at camp ... just got to find it.

As you said, Spartanburg is a great place that doesn't deserve the reputation some on here give it ... many are going back nearly 20 years (to the start of camp here) and haven't looked at what's changed here.

One thing I have to disagree with, though ... I would say to stay away from that motel (used to be the Days Inn) across Church Street from campus!! I'd pay to stay at the Marriott, within walking distance, or stay at the Fairfield Inn, Courtyard Marriott, etc. near campus -- just a couple of minutes drive.

I believe that was it. Bull Hawg's you say? Should I try it?

Yes, Bull Hawg's is great ... just a few minutes' drive from campus out Pine Street (away from the Interstate). We have lots of other good restaurants within easy driving from camp as well. Again, I'll list some restaurants, bars and other stuff soon.

Restaurant and entertainment in/near downtown Spartanburg:

Every Thursday from 6 to 9 p.m. throughout the summer, the city presents Music on Main, free outdoor concerts held at the Denny’s Plaza on East Main Street. For a schedule of the bands, go to www.cityofspartanburg.org and click on “Music on Main,” or “friend” Music on Main on Facebook.

A remarkable number of prominent musicians hail from Spartanburg, known as the Hub City. The Spartanburg Music Trail (www.spartanburgmusictrail.com) provides signage and an audio tour honoring a dozen of the best, including the Marshall Tucker Band, Hank Garland, Pink Anderson and Champ Hood. The trail moves along Main Street from Daniel Morgan Avenue, crossing Church Street, to Liberty Street and turning left, ending at Dunbar Street.

In and around Spartanburg’s historic Morgan Square, where Gen. Daniel Morgan’s statue keeps watch, are a number of boutique shops and restaurants, including Wild Wing Café, the Lime Leaf Thai restaurant, Blues Boulevard jazz and dining club, Delaney’s Irish Pub, Miyako Sushi Bar, Hub Diggity Dog and Monsoon Noodle House. Also in the square area is C. Edwards Cigar Bar, which hosts live local music on its secluded patio, and Groucho’s sandwich shop.

Walk a block west of the square, and you’ll find the Hub City Bookstore, one of a tiny handful of non-profit bookstores in the country, and Little River Coffee Bar and Cakehead Bakery, where you can find the most awesome coffees, cupcakes and pastries. You can linger inside or take a seat at one of the outdoor tables to enjoy your goodies and a good book. Next door is Carriage House Wines, selling some of the finest wines you can find and hosting wine tastings and other events.

On the next block, across Daniel Morgan Avenue, is R.J. Rockers Brewing Co. (www.rjrockers.com), which hosts Tour & Taste Thursdays from 5 to 7 p.m. Adjacent is Cribbs Kitchen, an awesome “cool-casual” eatery serving lunch and dinner. On the other side of Rockers is Main Street Pub, serving R.J. Rockers beer as well as other adult beverages. Around the corner on Daniel Morgan Avenue is Brickhouse Pizza, which hosts trivia nights and other features, and on the other side of Main Street, also on Daniel Morgan Avenue, is Zarza, a restaurant serving eclectic cuisine featuring international dishes as well as American classics. Zarza often has live music, too.

Widen your horizons a bit, and near the central business district, you’ll find other food and drinking options: Sake Grill (N. Church St.), Mellow Mushroom (E. Main St.), Venus Pie (E. Main St.), Renato’s (Italian, Kennedy St.), Club 299 (Spartanburg Marriott, N. Church St.) and the Nu-Way (Kennedy St.), widely known for its award-winning Redneck Cheeseburgers.

Of course, no trip to Spartanburg is complete without at least one visit to the famous Beacon Drive-In, one of the last restaurants in the country to still offer curb-hop service. But to really have The Beacon “experience,” you need to go inside and hear J.C. “call it!” Order up your chili-cheese-aplenty and enjoy the pile of fried onion rings and French fries, and don’t forget the thing The Beacon is most famous for – its ice tea!

For home cooking, you don’t have to go far from training camp. Just across Pine Street (close, but driving there is recommended because walking across Pine Street could prove dangerous, if not impossible!) is Wade’s Restaurant, serving heaping helpings of a variety of meat-and-three combinations, along with their famous fresh-made yeast rolls. Also nearby is Ike’s Korner Grill, serving up the best local burgers, fresh-cut fries and fried baloney sandwiches.

Other Spartanburg restaurants you might want to check out: Dolline’s (burgers and hot dogs, Clifton community east of downtown), Billy D’s Stax (Greek/Italian/American, S. Pine St.), Bull Hawg’s (barbecue, S. Pine St. near Billy D’s), La Taverna (Italian, Dorman Centre, W.O. Ezell Blvd, west of downtown), Broadway Bagels (E. Main St.), Gerhard’s (German/Austrian, E. Main St.), II Samuels (E. Henry St. near S. Pine St.), Converse Deli (E. Main St.) and The Four Seasons (Fernwood-Glendale Road, off E. Main St.). A couple of new restaurants are Cuzina's (Green, E. Main St.), Lawson's Fork Cafe (Southern-style comfort food, E. Main St.) and Mon Amie (serving breakfast, brunch and lunch -- awesome French toast, omlettes, etc. - E. Main St.).

Hotel-wise, there are these chains within 5-10 minutes:

Comfort Inn

Extended Stay

Hampton Inn

Holiday Inn Express

Courtyard Marriott

Marriott Renaissance Park (walking distance)

Residence Inn

Comfort Suites

Jameson Inn

The Sunshine Inn is the one that's within walking distance that you should NOT stay in. Others to stay away from are College Inn, Main Street Motel, Sun 'N Sand ... there may be others, so if you're in doubt, ask me.

Downtown Spartanburg (but not in good walking distance from camp, but good for downtown restaurants, Morgan Square, etc.) also is Inn on Main, a NICE bed and breakfast.

Hotels listed on the www.VisitSpartanburg.com website that have "Duncan" addresses are right near the interstate (between Spartanburg and Greenville) and are less than 15 minutes away -- an easy drive on the interstate.

So I was talking with one of the Ast. coaches for the Panthers this weekend, and he mentioned that a lot of folks stay at the Marriott in Spartanburg. Anybody know how far it is from training camp?

Just a couple of blocks. Within walking distance of campus.

From the Marriott turn down Church Street toward Wofford (going north). You can walk through campus, but the best way is to go to Evins Street (traffic light past the light at the main entrance to campus - you'll pass the campus bookstore before you get to Evins) and turn right. Walk down Evins to the stop sign and turn left onto Cumming Street. Gibbs Stadium will be on the right. Pass the stadium and take the sidewalk around the left side of the outside of the stadium. That will lead you to a circle/cul de sac outside the practice fields.

The entrance this year will be moved from previous years. It will be down the hill (down Twitty Street) a bit on the left. There will be tents and signage, so you can't miss it.
