(Side note: It must have been cloudy in Greater D.C., because readers of this spot know we refer to Hackett as "The Groundhog." When he tried to practice on a sunny day here last year, he'd see his shadow, hurt himself and spend the next six weeks on the injury report.)

man-- thats jUST WRONG lol lol

yeah...some good stuff from gantt...

-- Line coaches on both sides of the ball are generally loud, but with new DL coach Brian Baker, it's a different, maybe more hard-boiled loud. That's no offense to former assistant Sal Sunseri, who said things I had to go look up before I realized I couldn't print them.

Baker's on his group hard, very demanding. It's a young group, so they need it, too.

that quote about sal...right on target. that guy had a mouth on him. i remember standing near a mom with her two sons at TC and sal started running his mouth and the mom's face just went white. pretty funny.

-- New QB coach Rip Scherer has been putting his guys through several new drills, but Sunday he added a twist. As he's teaching footwork by running them through a series of bags on the ground, he took a blocking dummy and whacked each of them as they passed, to get a little ball-security in as well.
THIS is a good thing. i am loving what Rip is doing with Jake and the other guys. he just flat out isn't going to let them get away with a crappy performance.

this is what i would call QB development. i wonder why we haven't done this before?

Oh I love that whacking the QBs while they pass him. I always liked that drill Zorn did with his QBs where he threw padded things at them and hit them while they were trying to throw. Maybe he will do that too?

that's probably next.

I hope so. It sure sounds like Henning and McCoy weren't really QB coaches in the sense I wanted them to be. Mc Coy isn't gonna have to do ISH in Denver with McDaniels there because McDaniels is a REAL ACTUAL QB coach and a playcaller.

I always HATED the barrel drill too, and Scherer has already replaced it. Too bad the old board isn't here so I could link to where I used to whine about it. lol

..he can teach all the footwork he wants..untill he spreads..the ball he will be same ole jake...*waits on the jake lovers*

Spreading the ball thing has already been proved false, Smitty and Mooses numbers as the 1 and 2 wr are right in line with the rest of the leagues 1's & 2's in percentage of passes that go their way.

fish much?

sounds like that may be one of the things they are going to push, though.

they brought in someone who could be that slot receiver that we have been needing (goodson) and a good pass catching FB. they are also seeming to pay more attention to the receiving skills that barnidge has.

they have a QB coach who is holding him accountable for every mistake that he makes and is going to be pushing him to be better on all fronts.

will it work? i'm inclined to believe it will mainly because of jakes work ethic and desire to improve. that can't be questioned. panthers have also provided him with a coach that will help him improve and teach him things that he should have been taught long ago and have him working on things he should have been working on long ago. (not exactly his fault that those two things hadn't happened...we had a QB coach who didn't develop QBs.)

this is true.

there is a thread that has the break down of who the ball went to and it went around a lot more than you would think.

    • I mean it's not even like this was his worst game of the season... I'm not done with him by any means but this feels more the norm for him than the exception:/
    • I'd give it a C mainly because of Brooks.  If we just didn't have a 2nd I'd argue B to B+ tbh. Brooks was a bad gamble, tho one that could still pay off long term. Yes XL only has 400 yards but... Look who is throwing him the ball. And I think he isn't a "true #1" but he's been able to consistently get open. Hands definitely need to be cleaned up.  But he should end the year with 500-600 yards. Like you said - Sanders looks great.  Get him a better QB / more time with a QB and I think he's gonna impress. We added a couple rotational players on D that have both made plays and show promise for the future from later rounds. So I'd say, Brooks really hurts this drafts grade. It'll be interesting to see how it progresses over the next 3 years. I've overall really liked Morgan's FA acquisitions, so...
    • Oh he would absolutely flourish. It’s the panthers way. It’s no different with coaches. Sometimes they reach their expiration date, go somewhere else, and find new success.  Similarly to Burns, how long to wait for the light to finally turn on?  Market forces will demand a salary that the panthers can not responsibly match. Sliding him to guard will fit his skill set better, but he has played LT for 3 years. He will receive offers from other teams wanting to pay him LT money.  At guard, he won’t start with what they have paid Hunt and Lewis. Center then?? Dunno. Maybe? He will become a backup by default once they draft their stud LT. I doubt Dan just stands pat. That’s not his MO.  So where does this put him? Can you match what other teams will offer for a backup LT/guard? Do you dish out franchise LT $ on a guy who still needs significant improvement in pass protection. This team will be DOA in the playoffs with the very first team who has a formidable speed rusher. What if he has hit his ceiling in pass protection already and they sign him long term? It’s a big gamble either way.
