Why Do We Have So Many Wrs And Tes On Our Roster?

I think there are 4 or 5 wr battling for the last spot. Smith Lafell Gettis Adams and PIlares are probably locks. That leaves Arijouto, Edwards, Manno and the other udfa battling for one spot barring injury. TE is probably similar with Olsen Harstock and Barnidge (maybe)

The possibility of injury and competition keeps the position full.

chudz is big on tight ends, so naturally we're going to be looking at more tight ends

the air coryell is predicated on deep passes so naturally we're going to be looking at more wide receivers

personally i think we should be bringing in about 18 kickers to compete, but that's just me

It's all about the change in offensive philosophy. Just like we used to stack up on RBs in the past, now we are in a constant search for more weapons. I think more than anything else it's just throwing stuff at a wall and seeing what sticks. Hurney has never had this kind of creative coaching staff around him, to be honest. Rivera knows defense, and knows what types of players he wants in that defense. Offensively, I think we are just getting obsessed with bringing in as much talent at WR and TE in hopes we will find a hidden gem to include with what we already have.

As effective as the offense was last year, it's rather obvious we are not deep at those positions. We are set at RB & FB. The only real question mark as far as a roster spot is concerned in that area is Poole or Vaughn. But think about WR. You have Smith and LaFell. The rest are unknowns either due to age, lack of production in the past, or in Gettis' case returning from injury. If you look around the league you can never have enough weapons. Say DeAngelo goes down, we still have a very good rushing attack with Stew and Tolbert. But what if Smitty goes down? We are throwing LaFell out there and hoping Gettis returns in good form and someone else blows up. It's a constant search for depth at WR for us and we just didn't have the money to go about fixing it through FA, not to mention that's really just not how our organization rolls for the most part.

I like it. If nothing else it'll be fun to see who performs during training camp. By the sheer number of them alone, we are guaranteed at least one or two surprises.
