Players Are Going The Extra Mile But Cba Rules Are Getting In The Way.

Recommended Posts

Ron Rivera had to do something last week he had probably never done in 16 years of coaching: Kick players out of the team facility for studying too long.

Rivera, the Panthers’ second-year coach, learned there were players who had been at Bank of America Stadium last Monday longer than the six-hour limit spelled out in the NFL’s new collective bargaining agreement.

So Rivera stuck his head in the first-floor meeting rooms to break the bad news.

“I went downstairs and said, ‘OK, everybody who’s been here since 7, you’ve got to go,’” Rivera said. “So those guys got up and left.”

I love the effort. This is exactly what the team needs, players that want it and want it bad. I hate how the time limit rules are getting in the way though.

Easy solution. They can go steady together at home. Nothing that says they can't do that. I'm sure most positions are getting together after hrs anyways

I agree with this and think it is a good idea in principle. It is likely that a veteran player invites other players home to study film and study play books, etc... In other instances players like Cam are going to IMG and bringing in thier receivers to practice and go through drills.

Both of these things are good and the individual players should be applauded for stepping up and getting the extra work in.

The big problems I see with this are:

1. Some players get left out. I suspect there are some UDFA and other journeymen tht may not get the invite to an estabished vets pad to go over film or go to Florida to play catch.

2. The player, not the team or the league is paying for these expenses.

I understand it toa certain extend but can't seem to embrace the selective bargaining agreement.
