The Mini Camp Thread....(updated Sunday)

Again, you're assuming Meeks is getting total control over the defense. Fox has never been one to tell his coordinators, "Hey, have at it, I don't give a poo what you do as long as we win ballgames." He's still going to be heavily involved. And as long as that plays true I don't see Brown starting, baring him putting on more muscle and beating out stiff competition. I agree, he will get plenty of snaps regardless, but I'd feel much more comfortable seeing him coming in just on passing downs.

I'm pretty sure that Fox has always let his coordinators run their side of the ball, unless things weren't working as well as he wanted them to.

It's all about perception. Two years ago, the perception was that Fox was interferring with Davidson's offense because it sucked, but last year everybody assumed that he finally let Davidson run his offense without interferrence because they were scoring left and right. The truth was that the offense just got better because they had better players.

I searched the thread but didn't see it, so I figure I'd post it and toot my own horn, from Gantt's blog:

-- After spending the pre-draft process looking at names and numbers, it's sometimes startling to see these guys up close.

Seventh-round CB Captain Munnerlyn's much thicker than he sounds when you hear 5-8, 186. He's solid, and moves well, and could make things interesting on several levels.

I told you so... This guy is gonna take somebody's roster spot.

I'm not saying he's going to meddle in their playcalling, but he does hire coordinators who have a similar mentality to him. Jeff Davidson's playcalling isn't drastically different from Henning's. We still run draws on third and 34 and we still run those quick outs to Smitty. The difference is that we have an unbelievable offensive line and two of the best backs in the league and we can execute it better than ever before.

Same thing with Meeks. We're not turning into the Colts. And we aren't going to start using smaller DEs. At least I hope to God we aren't. Like Mintal pointed out; yes, it could happen, as in there's no law against it and the stadium wont collapse if he starts. But based on Fox's history with the type of players he uses on the defensive line, Brown needs to get bigger if he wants to start.

And I'm not ragging on the kid, nor do I think he's going to fail. I just dont see him getting big enough and learning to play the run well enough in four months to beat out Brayton or Johnson THIS SEASON.

there's plenty of highlight material of him in the backfield disrupting and stopping the run.

Yeah, but his pass rushing moves are sick. There may be some questions of his stamina for a whole game, (size? Don't know whether that should matter, but it does bring up questions, before the fact of course), but he has all the moves a pass rushing specialist needs...

In fairness, that's why they're called HIGHlights. They aren't going to show how many times he got blown up by an offensive lineman which allowed a big running play. And the college game is way different from the pros. The best tackles he faced in college might not even be starters in the NFL.

Yeah, but you can say the same thing about any DE in any draft, regardless of their listed weight. Hell, Brian Orakpo is only 4lbs heavier than Brown is, and I guarantee you the Redskins are expecting him to play the run.

I personally think that the fact that we gave up next years first (32nd overall, optimistically) to get EB, speaks VOLUMES as to just how much control Fox has given Meeks. Not exactly a prototype John Fox DE...

If he has so much control why isn't Brown working with the first team then? If this is Ron Meek's prototypical defensive end and he's already in the size range Meeks looks for in a DE I can't imagine why he wouldn't be starting over BRAYTON at least. I think oppositely from you, the fact that we traded so much to get an undersized DE, yet he's NOT working with the first team shows that Fox still exercises a fair amount of control over the personnel he wants in his defense.

I hope maybe he can be one of those rare defensive ends that are undersized but still play outstanding against the run (See Michael Strahan) I just wouldn't bet on it.

exactly and neither was the DT or the CB we took fox type of guys, they were all smallish Dlinemen or tampa 2 DB's.

This is Meek's defense now, Beason has already put in his blog that the defensive scheme was changing drastically. So all bets are off on who starts at the other DE spot. It could be Johnson or it could be Brown. Either way I think Brown gets into around 40 percent of the team's defensive snaps for the season.

it's mini - camps man, give the kid time to get adjusted and then look and see where he is.
