The Mini Camp Thread....(updated Sunday)

If the Panthers hold true to form, and Marshall has a good year, he will most likely be extended before the season is over, and it won't be an issue. Either way, it's too early to be worrying about that stuff.

Richard Marshall was drafted, at least in part, to cover for the possible loss of Ken Lucas.

Likewise, it's safe to say Sherrod Martin might be a pick made in case Richard Marshall is lost.

The Panthers have gotten decent at "pre-emptive drafting", something teams like the Steelers have been doing for while now. It essentially means looking at your needs two or three years down the road, rather than just this season.

DT Babatunde Oshinowo seems like a good kid..fox loves the smart kids

Oshinowo, 26, is extremely strong. He has bench-pressed 520 pounds, but is far from being a stereotypical jock.

If he weren't trying to play football, he might be working in Silicon Valley.

He scored 37 on the Wonderlic intelligence test before the 2006 draft, just three points shy of the highest score possible. He received an undergraduate degree in electrical engineering from Stanford and began working on his master's during his senior season.

Hmmm...I was under the impression that Marshall was drafted to cover the loss of Ricky Manning Jr.

Several teammates have remarked that the already-intense Marshall has taken on a new demeanor in workouts, approaching things with the same kind of tenacity which enabled DeAngelo Williams to make his step up in level last year.

If he's working out like D was, look out! I'ma call it: we are going to cheer Marshall more than boo him...

On how much Meeks is bringing from Indianapolis and incorporating into Carolina's defense: In this league there aren't too many new things. It's all pretty much the same, really. If anything we started from square one. We're doing some basic things right now in this mini-camp and putting the emphasis back on technique and fundamentals, which is kind of what you do at the beginning of every year. Other than somebody that looks different up there presenting it, it's still football in the National Football League.

There's a difference in philosophy right there between Meeks and Trdo... Meeks emphasizes technique while Trdo emphasizes scheme...

Trdo over-complicated the scheme + did little to nothing to emphasize technique = defense on the field too long...

:iagree:

I thought that part of the quote spoke volumes about what's been wrong with our defense, not just last year, but since Trgo took over for Del Rio. Fundamentals and technique have been on a steady decline, but it looks like the new defensive regime is going to place alot of emphasis on this going forward. And IMO it's an approach that's well overdue!

Manning would have been one of the best corners in the NFL if the 5 yard rule didn't come into effect after 2003. But it did, and now he's Tyrone Poole, without the spit.

agreed, he was a good corner before the rule and a really bad one after the rule. That rule completely took him off his game and he hasn't got it back, and probably won't.
