A Letter To Alex Smith From Me

Not blaming Cam because our defense was complete ass but in general a QB is pretty responsible for losing a lead. I mean a team can't catch up unless the other team stops scoring.

(Waits for everyone to say no QB scores every time he is on the field, defense should've got some stops, yada yada)

Btw why the hell would you write this if you weren't looking for pie/rep?

Of course a quarterback isn't responsible for losing a lead. Only the defense can lose a lead because they are on the field when the lead changes. The offense is responsible for getting the lead back if the defense gives them enough time to operate. It is pitting their units against ours and winning at least 2 of the three if not all of them. It isn't anyone's fault although some units are obviously more responsible for the win or the loss.

I know it is a bizarre concept but I remember a time when our defense could not only stop their offense but cause a turnover in the process. Part of my hope when we got Rivera was that our defense would be stout given his background. I expect a big turnaround this year. Then if Cam can figure out how to score in the fourth quarter we should be fine. He surely had the first 2 quarters figured out last year for the most part.

Against the Falcons we were up 23-7 at the half, didn't score a point in the second half and lost 31-23. IMO the quarterback and offense were partly responsible for losing the lead. Falling to score had just as much to do with losing the lead as the defense not getting a stop.

It may be semantics but failing to score is not keeping the hammer down and closing the door when you are in control. Not making the right adjustments to their adjustments and not delivering in the clutch. Areas the offense needs to work on. But lets be honest. We averaged 25 points a game and that should have netted us a winning season if the defense was doing their job. That is easy to see. You can say it was a failure to score points but the elephant in the room is the 23 points we surrendered in the second half to an offense we controlled for the first half. Our offense could have helped their cause for sure but even a few more stops would have sealed the deal.

Cam could've easily led us to a winning season if the defense wasn't so busy giving up leads in the 4th quarter consistently and special teams wasn't missing field goals and overall doing a piss poor job on returns

how anybody could think Newton did less than a remarkable job last year given the circumstances is foolish. Remember our offense was top 10 while our defense and special teams were both bottom 5 if not straight up last in the league. did the offense look terrible at times? yes, but not enough that it was a serious problem like the other 2 phases of the game were.

I agree and I'm not trying to say the offense was bad or was to blame for losing. But I have the same train of thought as Bellicheck, the offense's job is to score every time they are on the field. The defense deserves most of the blame definitely when a team loses a large lead. But the failure of the defense doesn't completely free the offense IMO. The offense not being able to close the door as you said IMO still gives them part of the blame for losing leads.

Given the circumstances, completely understandable why our offense struggled late. Which is why my original statement said "in general"

Another example would be the Cowboys vs. Lions game. Dallas lead by 24. Romo threw 3 second half INTs, 2 for touchdowns. He was directly responsible for them losing that lead.

Good write-up OP. People complaining about with that tl;dr nonsense if you don't want to read on the internet, stick to Youtube. You obviously don't know what forums are for anyway. If all you want is titpics, there's plenty of free porn sites for that. If all you want is stupid snarky one-liner banter, stick to the ESPN and NFL.com comment sections of articles.

I would agree that throwing pick sixes in particular would fit the definition of the offense being responsible for helping to lose a lead since they were on the field when the other team scored points. So yeah the Cowboys losing that big lead was partly the offense's fault as they put the defense in the hole and gave up 14 points directly,

Like I have said before, there is some tl;dr "nonsense", as you call it, in this thread, but that goes on in many threads. Being one that does tend to write long (but, I might add, entertaining) pieces on occasion, I have gotten the same type of responses. I am not a hater, and am quite empathetic and even sympathetic regarding this issue. But, like I said, when I see a letter to someone I just want to see and/or expect a different perspective, a different nuanced angle on similar a perspective, humor, shtick, or something. This letter is right on as far as the theme (IMO), but IMO it contained points that had already been mentioned in the other threads, and I think that this could be why there is a perceived negative undertone to a thread that was meant to evoke positive rsentiment (or negative responses if you are a Smith-49ers person).
