It's called sticking up for your teammates. Cam doesn't need to respond, and he doesn't have to.

Alex Smith DOES have a point about passing yards. But the only reason he even said anything was to deflect questions about HIS performance. Because he is an average at best QB. Alex Smith can say with ease that passing yards don't matter, because the 49ers dont' ask him to do much. Here, the Panthers will go as far as Cam leads them.

You know, I'm fence-sitting a bit on this. Alex Smith had a point at first. Stats don't mean much without the wins. But then he took a shot at the team and at Cam specifically by saying he only got his numbers because we were down all the time, which is just demonstrably false. I think he's just bitter at the knowledge that if Cam was in San Fran, he'd either be holding a clipboard on the sidelines or he'd be at home watching the game on his TV.
