Alex Smith Had Some Choice Words About Mr. Newton.

Recommended Posts

I'm sorry, but how exactly is he wrong? Sure, it was fun to see an electrifying offense, but were you all satisfied with 6 wins? I also don't see how his quote is a knock on Newton. I think he was pointing out that it's a team effort, and passing yardage doesn't win a game for you.

Pump the brakes, fellas.

Have you watched our games? Playing no huddle and coming from behind? We were up in so many games, including GB and would lose in the end because of our D.

So, to answer your question:

1. He did not rack up all those yards playing from behind

2. He did not play no-huddle because it would have been dumb to play it when we were ahead in the game.

Damn

of course he's not wrong. if you read what he actually says it reads more like an indictment of the panthers as a team than newton as a quarterback.

i can't blame people for being pissed off though. lots of tender nerves here after the last year.

Smith made a valid point and used the best example available to illustrate his point. His comments aren't critical of Cam Newton as much as they are the Carolina Panthers. He's basically saying that there's nothing to gain from having the game constantly placed on your shoulders and having to pass 40-60 times a game. He's content letting his defense get stops and possessing the ball while slowly moving the chains and outscoring the opponent.

Smith met Dru Brees in the playoffs, another example of the QB who passes for a lot of attempts and yardage. At the end of the day Smith advanced in the playoffs.

Keep in mind Smith averaged 247.5 yards per game in the playoffs with 5 touchdowns and 0 interceptions for a 101 QB rating. Second only to Eli Manning and Dru Brees in playoff QB ratings. He can play.

I feel like many on this board have elevated Cam to All Pro Superbowl winning WB status already. He had a great rookie year on a losing team. Thats all. Hopefully he will continue to grow and play at a very high level. But until the wins start rolling in, its hard to be so very excited about one player, for me at least.

Yea. Cam Newton was a rookie who came to a team plagued by injuries and put up absurd numbers and broke NFL records. He won 6 games even with one of the most abysmal defenses in the league.

Tough to be excited about what he can do with a healthy team.
