Offense: At Least Panthers In The Same Breath As Patriots. Pfw Analysis

Check out what the Pro Football Weekly guys have to say when comparing the Cats to the Pats. The Patriots pretty much get the unanimous mod, but at least the Panthers are being talked about regarding the elite offenses in the league. [Link]. There is a poll. Go vote for your Panthers.

Editor-in-chief Keith Schleiden:

“Is Cam Newton the most exciting young player in football? Quite possibly. Is he and the offense he leads, after one year, worthy of being lumped into the same category as the Patriots? I think not.

It's nice for our offense to even be compaired to NE. Of course I go with us but I would like to see us move the ball better on short yardage plays and goal line drives. I think that our additions will help with that and our defense and ST hopefully will give us better field position.

I think the most accurate thing they said was that it was going to come down to Newton not throwing another 17 pics and sometimes forcing the ball. He doesn't need to throw for 300 yards every game simply move the sticks using all his weapons. If there is one area he needs to improve, it is in the fourth quarter driving late to score the winning points. There were a number of games where we were ahead in the fourth quarter only to lose in the last 10 minutes. If he can keep a positive attitude and inspire his offense to score last then we make the leap from a 6-10 team to a 10-6 team this year. Delhomme never had the physical skills that Newton does, but he could inspire his team in the fourth quarter. They need to show Newton some footage of 2003. If Newton had Jake's fire and his own athleticism, the sky is the limit. Our offense was plenty good in the first half but was mediocre at best in the fourth quarter which is where games are won or lost in the NFL.

On another note. I think we have to stop being grateful to be getting press and being mentioned in the same sentence as the big boys of the league. It is like being happy to make the playoffs with little expectation you can win. To make the next step as a team and as fans we need to expect to be there, expect to get mentioned and be pissed off when we don't. Sure it is likely a new feeling for some fans but it wasn't that long ago that we were highly respected, like in 2008 when we went 12-4 and although we imploded in the playoffs were a favorite to win the NFC. Our defense was tough and we weren't an easy out for anyone.

The last few years have emboldened our rivals to think they are better than us and that we are a bottom dweller instead of a team working hard to recapture our standing at the top of this division. Sure we have some way to go but maybe it happens this year. If the defense gels as I think it could, this will be our year not 2 or 3 years down the road. '

Perhaps I am overreacting but the whole I am glad we are mentioned in the same sentence with New England just chaps my butt. Screw NE. Screw the Saints*, this is our time.........................

I like that attitude P-55. You get rep for this:

"The last few years have emboldened our rivals to think they are better than us and that we are a bottom dweller instead of a team working hard to recapture our standing at the top of this division. "

Eli threw 16 picks and won the superbowl. Stafford threw 16 picks as well. You know until brady and rodgers have been throwing these under 10 pick seasons, 17 picks was considered an extremely low amount with the amount of attempts newton had. People make much too big a deal out of this aspect of his rookie year. Yea sure it could be lower, but its pretty damn rare to see significantly lower than that.

Picks alone don't tell the whole story but Ints as a function of TDs does. 17 Ints is not bad if you throw 29 TDs like Eli did. But when you only throw 21 TDs to 17 Ints it is much different. The same with Stafford he threw 41 TDs to go along with thise 16 picks.

So no 17 picks was not good when you only threw 21 TDs. And it is not rare to see lower. Rodgers threw 45 TDs and 6 picks.
