Everrett Brown called most impact rookie next season

We've gotten way off topic here - we're all Panthers fans and the end of the day.

Go in peace.

It's doubtful that rayzor will be the bigger man here. He likes to sling mud and then shy away from direct questions.

Do you agree that a lot of this moniker as a high impact rookie has to do with the shape of the Panther D and the opportunity there or that its strictly a talent eval.?

I think that it has to do with the shape of the defense, just due to the name itself. For a rookie - or any player - to have a high impact on a team, there has to be not only talent, but the relative need for that position. It's an oversimplification and a bit of an exaggeration, but Mark Sanchez would not be a high impact rookie with the Colts or Patriots, for instance - but he has a big chance to be in New York.

There's a balance between the two, and I think Brown has the right situation here in Carolina to strike as an impact player.

No need to re-state what everyone has already said in great detail, but the shape of our defensive line coupled with what seems to be a pretty talented player - at least at the collegiate level - has potential written all over it.

that is pretty much the way I see it too. It helps me with the whole trade sacrifice surrounding Brown if this is actually true ( i am guessing that opportunity and situation are actual criteria). Realistically it may be a year or two before he can prove his worth but in the meantime if it is the opinion of smart people that the Panthers saw the need and filled it with a guy that can make a huge impact, Brown's cost looks cheaper.

A good pass rusher can make an impact on any team, and they don't even have to be a starter to do it. Look at the Vikings...would you say that they had a crappy D-line before they traded for Jarrett Allen? I don't think so, but he still had a pretty significant impact.

Doesn't matter...a rookie can make an impact just like a veteran can. That's why every team puts so much time, money and effort into the draft.

Case in point...Richard Marshall was a 2nd round pick who immediately made an impact even though he was a nickel back. He got some INT's and made some big tackles on defense and he made some big ST's plays. He pretty much made everybody forget about Ricky Manning Jr.

but this is not A impact its the biggest impact of a rookie.

So? Don't you think it's possible that Schlereth really believed that Brown was the best pass rusher in the draft? It's not like he would the only one in the world with that opinion.

its not about the best pas rusher MC. saying that Mark thinks he is "the best..." proves Mark was looking for a weak situation to plug a player into.

No longer is this an opinion. The situation, opportunity, need of a team is probably as much as 50% of this decision.

That's your assumption, but it's not what the man said at all. Hell, if your assumption is true, then why didn't he pick Orakpo? The Skins needed a DE even more than the Panthers, and the guy was picked ahead of Brown.

I think it's really hard to speculate what kind of an impact any rookie will have no matter how good they looked in college because they have never played a down in the NFL. The transition from college to the NFL is drastic, every NFL team is a college all-star team.

Brown's athleticism clearly jumps out on tape, the concern in the NFL is his size - but we'll just have to wait and see. I think the Panthers are a perfect fit for Brown in more than one way - we have a DC who knows how to get the most out of an undersized DE and this is Brown's hometown team. My gut feeling is that Brown is going to be great - and better than Orakpo who seems like a one-trick pony to me. From what I've seen of Orakpo, he seems to rely mostly on strength and he's not going to be able to out-muscle NFL tackles most of the time.

Not sure if this is doable agaisnt every offense but I could see a starting lineup of:

LE Johnson

DT Brayton

DT Peppers

RE Brown...

providing a hell of a pass rush. Even against the run they would be fairly stout. Probably not the best lineup for a team like the Giants or Vikings but agaisnt the Patriots and Cards it could be very effective.

Also, Peppers complains he's not used to maximize his talent. JMO but I think Peppers could be THE best pass rushing DT in the league. Crazy thought I guess.
