Holy Crap, Used Cars Are Expensive Right Now.

Here's a fun fact for you. The extra amount you spend on a hybrid is more than it will save you in gas. So essentially you are paying more to own a hybrid, then you would have saved in gas.

With that said, I own a hybrid Camry. Two years ago I found a 3 yr old fully loaded hybrid Camry with 61k miles on it for $16,000. I spent another $800 on it for a 100k bumper to bumper warranty. My neighbor is te business manager at a Toyota dealership.

I have a similar story. I have a Civic Hybrid, but my girlfriend worked at a BMW dealership at the time. Since the person wasn't trading in a BMW they ripped the guy off on trade-in because they generally won't sell used cars unless they are used luxury cars. They gave him like 4,000 below blue book for it. I got it for cost. It was cheaper than the non-hybrid cars I was looking at at the time.

  • 1 year later...

Used cars are not at all expensive but there are some dealers who intentionally raise the prices of used cars because they need to cover up their shops overhead expenses. I will suggest you to go for online stores; there you will find lot of variety that too at unbelievable price point. Couple of months back, I bought a used BMW car from http://www.automotix.net/bargain_cars.html at the cheapest price point.

This is why I haven't been able to buy a vehicle since the beginning of last summer. I have a certain amount set aside that you would think be able to buy you a very nice used car. But nope. They are either not that great or they are really good but too high priced. One repair shop sells nice cars but at least 4k above what they are worth and won't come down 1 bit (I asked). They've been sitting on their lot since the end of last spring (probably 10 in total). Delearships have their vehicles wayy too high. It's ridiculous! People want too much money for a vehicle that is almost or over 100k miles. 5 years ago I would've been able to have my choice of vehicle with the money I have set aside now. But nope. I have to keep waiting till I find someone that is reasonable. I can't afford financing right now btw. I think with the way the economy is now, people want to hang on to their cars longer.

I got a much better deal on a brand new car BTW.

3 years ago, if you told me that I would have bought new, I'd have called you crazy.  But the deals really are in new cars right now.

My wife and I started shopping for a car today, went to both a local Honda and Hyundai dealership.

Now I knew that there is somewhat of a used car shortage going on, but all of the cars we looked at were uniformly 15-25% higher than edmunds.com's expected dealer retail price for their respective mileage and trim, and even more above private party values. They also seem more resistant to come down than when I last looked 3 years ago.

Are people really paying this? Poop. Sticker shock.

What did you end up getting?

Prices must be better away from Charlotte. We have a lot of people calling about cars who live in Charlotte.(I am in Hickory)  In fact had someone drive from Greeneville, SC to buy a pre-owned Maxima.

Anyone looking...let me know what you want.

I did the same on mine. With Honda's the depreciation is so minimal, and the interest so low for a new car (I got 5 years 1.9%, paid off a year early), that it just made sense to buy new, unless you just can't afford the price point.

my wife has a car thats just below a year from being paid off. 2005. we get letters every couple of days BEGGING us to trade the car in.

they are doing some equity formulas along with inventory and credit scores to hook many on payments at a higher rate.

its a game.

now the trick for us is what do we do in a year? i have always gone without a payment until the last 3 years and i can't stand it. between 2 cars i prefer to stick that 500 in the market or park it in cash somewhere.

im finally leaning towards lease because of price point and just not having to deal with repairs.

We went the road less traveled and got a mazda5. We're still really pleased with it a year later. It suits our needs perfectly.
