Any Pet Lovers? Torn Between Two Dog Breeds

I work with many (20 each) dobermans and ridgebacks weekly and have all my life from vets to groom shops to boarding facilities. I have a lot of experience in all aspects, animals are my life.

Both are high energy, extremeley intelligent dogs, the pincher the more intelligent of the two (technically). Pinchers are also tend to be less aggressive. The ridgeback will need to be socialized more so than the pincher. Pincher now days are bred much more different (most versions, but warlocks as well) and are not an aggressive breed like they were 20-30 years ago. At least if you get from a good breeder. Ridgebacks tend to be more aggressive and act more serious than a doberman, where as dobermans are more playful. The ridgeback will need more of a dominant owner. Ridgebacks are lion hunters and they will chase and swat at /tackle things that run, they are more instinctual. If you have a cat or other pets, or want to be able to socilization is a must. Ridgebacks can be taught to socialize with other dogs but they rarley play the same way. They are much more calm but still assertive, still with high energy like a dobie except it comes out in bursts or running/chasing rather than playing.

Not as much work has to go into the dobie as far as concerns for aggression. The dobie's behavior will resemble a lab much more closeley than a ridgeback. I do believe the doberman will have more health issues than ridgeback.

I would highly recomend not thinking a ridgeback is less time than a dobie. The ridgeback is more succeptable to behavior issues, especially in the beginning, and needs an owner that invests time in understanding this unique breed, that needs to be watched by the owner to be sure tendancies are not allowed (lik aggression). A dobie is more likeley to be submissive, especially now days and will have a more playful, youthful personality (kind of like a lab).

ression).

They really are two really different breeds. Personally, it sounds like your a breed lover? I recomend saving a dog, or buying what you want and saving a buddy to go with him later on. Both ridegbacks and dobermans are intelligent, easy to train and make wonderful dogs; both have great temperment towards humans (with a good owner of course), both are great with kids and are both very loyal to their owners. All this info comes from experience, there are always exceptions and of course the enviroment and owner have a lot to do with how great a dog turns out.

Also dogs learn FAR MORE from each other than they do humans. Soon as you get a puppy find a well-trained dog that is not aggressive and let them hang out as much as possible. Not only will your dog get socializing it will be learning the RIGHT behaviors. However, be careful who your dogs play with, they will learn aggression and bad behavior from another dog faster than any kind of training you could provide.

Do Not Get A Husky!

Worst dogs ever.

Will not listen to orders, will run from you at the drop of a hat, digs under fences, and shed like crazy all the time.

My roommate has one and it's one of the worst dogs I have ever been in contact with.

P.S. If you are going to be working for 12 hours straight, I don't recommend getting a puppy at all, unless you have someone there to care for it multiple times while you are working.

Have always wanted a Blue Lacy ever since I saw documentary on them when I was young. Obviously the documentary didn't mention any negatives about them, so if I ever got serious about buying one, I'd have to do some more hardcore research, but if I could pick any other dog other than the ones I already have, that's what I'd pick. Great outside dog.

I got this little Husky when he was 5 weeks. Great dog. Loves to run, loves to play, loves every person he meets, and loves other animals. Doesn't listen to a damn word I say unless there is something in it for him though. Fun dog to have.

If you love Huskies but don't want a dig quite that size, check out the Alaskan Klee Kai. They are a miniature huskie . Range anywhere from 15-20 lbs. absolutely beautiful and intelligent dogs. I swear they look like someone threw a huskie in the dryer and shrunk them.

They are very rare and run about $2k....usually takes about 12 months in a waiting list because they usually only have litters of 1-3 puppies.

Fantastic dogs....we used to have one.

Alaskan Klee Kais are quite interesting dogs. I looked into them when I was getting Lykos. I had read that most of them are one-owner dogs and they aren't a fan of other people or other animals. I'm sure this isn't the case for all of them, but I read it's quite common.

If you know how to train a Husky, they are very loyal and very smart. They will listen to orders, as long as you show the dog that you are the authority figure. It does take additional training though. You have to have a very active lifestyle, as I do.

I have had both Boxers and Bulldogs in the past. I can see you have a bulldog. They are great dogs for people that want a dog that doesn't do much, save for being extremely cute.

I'm meeting with a Ridgeback breeder Tuesday. I'm going to talk with them & spend time with their Ridgebacks & put a deposit for their litter due this summer. There is a Doberman Pinscher rescue in Asheville & I'm going this weekend to adopt a 2-year old female. They said she is excellent with puppies, dogs, cats, etc. but was abused & doesn't trust humans. Evidently someone bought her to show & abused her because she didn't show well. She is a beautiful fawn dobie with show cropped ears. I'll have a huge fenced back yard so she will have plenty of room while I'm working & will make a good companion for the ridgeback puppy so he isn't destructive while I'm working.

I just have to convince my gf to let me have 2 large dogs inside the house because her evil cat hates dogs. :P
