Top Live Performances

Speaking of Springsteen, he and Patti Smith wrote this one together in 1978.

Gotta say, this is probably the best version I've heard.

Covers are rarely better, and I don't even have to see this to know which song Natalie Merchant is covering. However, in 2009 at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Anniversary concerts in Madison Square Garden, Springsteen and Patti teamed up once again to do it live and it was great.

I've seen that performance and it is fantastic.

I guess the reason I always go back to the the 10,000 Maniacs version is because it combines the best of both worlds for me.

Smith and Springsteen are among the greatest songwriters in the history for rock music. Pure poets. Great performers as well. Don't get me wrong. I just primarily see them as writers above all else.

Then you had 10,000 Maniacs (w/ Natalie Merchant) who represented consumate musicianship above all things.

Boom goes the dynamite.

The audio sucks on this video and the one from my phone was even worse as I was about 6 rows from the stages. And while it's not the best show that I've ever been too, this was still a pretty awesome concert at the Fillmore.
