you could say linebacker corps or wide reciever corps and it may make sense, but when referring to the team and its core players, like cam newton and charles johnson or jon beason, the central pieces of a unit, core makes more sense

That's because they are two different words not meant to be used interchangeably.

Yeah and they both make sense, it just depends on how you are using them. Does the team have a good core to build around (cam, jon, charles, stewie), or are you referring to a group (corps), such as the recievers or running backs?

"We have a great corps" - What are you referring to?
