Lions cut TE Micheal Gaines

The Detroit Lions released TE Michael Gaines on Wednesday, Scout.com has confirmed. Gaines signed a four-year, $10 million deal with the Lions in March of 2008.

Gaines, who is known mostly as a blocking tight end, became expendable after the Lions selected TE Brandon Pettigrew during last weekend's NFL draft. The Lions still have six tight ends on their roster as of now.

Gaines was originally selected by the Carolina Panthers in the seventh round of the 2004 draft.

Also of note, the team waived QB Drew Henson earlier this week.
