Gettis would have to suffer a major injury to fall any lower than #3 on the depth chart.

I like Gettis just as much as the next person, but he's very likely on the same level as the rookies, with regards to this coaching staff. He didn't make it out of his first training camp with this staff, so I doubt that's he's earned much with them, if anything.

He was penciled in as the starter last year until he got injured. Rivera was also praising him on how well he was looking at practice.

But regardless, he is just that much more talented than the others. I'd be absolutely stunned if he fell below #3 on the depth chart, especially to someone like Manno.

Got a link to that? Because the last quote I remember from Rivera, literally a day or two before he got hurt was along the lines of "We haven't really had any receivers step up besides Smith..........."

On how disappointing it is to lose Gettis, who ranked second on the Panthers with 508 yards receiving on 37 catches as a rookie last season: It's disappointing because the young man really showed. He had a good last few days. He's got a bright future. Whatever it entails, he'll get it right and we'll have him ready to go when he's ready.

On how the injury occurred: It was down in the red zone. He was releasing and he got jammed, and his foot caught and slipped in a bad direction. So it was disappointing. The young man, like I said, was having a really good camp.

Wow, quite the quote you have there, that clearly states that he was penciled in as a starter. Here's some other quotes for you though....

Coach Ron Rivera, who has developed an early reputation for being forthcoming and honest with his answers, considers Smith the team’s No. 1 receiver but said the No. 2 spot is “up in the air.”

“I think LaFell and Gettis have both shown spurts that they have that kind of ability (to be the No. 2 receiver) and it’s going to be which one takes the bull by the horns and steps up,” Rivera said. “And I think with what Armanti has done, he’s shown us that he deserves an opportunity and we’ll find places to put him on the field. I’m real excited about (Edwards) and real intrigued about his abilities.”

Twice in recent days Rivera has expressed the need for another receiver to emerge and take pressure off Smith, a four-time Pro Bowler who turned 32 in the offseason. LaFell and Gettis, who combined for 75 receptions as rookies in 2010, are expected to return to practice this week.

"We're looking for a guy that's going to make plays, a guy that's willing to come in and block. And for a guy that can ascend and become the guy that's going to take over at that position," Rivera said. "I think the biggest thing right now is we've had nobody step to the forefront."

Naanee can help the young receivers with his knowledge of Chudzinski's offense, which he said is "very similar" to what the Chargers ran. But Rivera sees Naanee as much more than a mentor.

"With a guy like Legedu Naanee who's out there, who's been in a No. 2 in certain situations in San Diego, who knows the system, we thought this would be a good opportunity to bring a guy in that has that kind of potential and ability," Rivera said. "And we're not giving up on anybody, by any means. We really believe that the other guys all have the opportunity to ascend as well. We'll make that judgment come September 11."

That was TWO DAYS BEFORE HE TORE HIS ACL......just so you know.

Maybe not "penciled" in but David Gettis was the one getting the first team reps in training camp and likely was going to be the starter up until he got injured.

Regardless, Gettis is not falling below #3 on the depth chart at wide receiver and I guarantee you that it is LaFell/Gettis for the #2 job in training camp.

I like Gettis, and I think he has all the ability in the world, but realistically, he hasn't earned anything with this staff. That was my point, he's going to be fighting for that WR3 spot on equal ground with every other scrub we've got, until he earns it.

Makes for a feel good story but we'll see.

I don't see how gettis has a substantial leg up that much more than the rooks. Essentially it's like he's entering only his second year. An entire season missed gelling with the new offense. He's got just as much to prove as they do.

I just looked up his pro day results. He did well in all but one measurable - the bench press. I know you don't need to be Arnold Schwarzenegger to be a WR, but only benching 3 times... that worries me.
