The Giants haven't spent THAT many high picks on D lineman. They just hit on every damn one of them. If Everette Brown had been a hit like Osi we would have our bookends and no one would ever bring up the DE position.

mcdermott's defensive scheme doesn't require interior linemen that are penetrating pass rushers. their job is to hog lineman and control gaps as necessary while keeping blockers out of open space.

unless you are willing to debate mcdermott's philosophy versus NYG's you should probably jump ship on this argument.

This would preclude then—unless there were more shuffling—that Keek will be the nickel LB next to Beason. Davis is also quite good in coverage, and this also gives Anderson the ability to rest and stay fresh for run downs being that he is probably the weakest starting LB in pass coverage.

When Davis spells Keek at nickel LB, it would be really interesting to see Keek try to rush the passer. He would obviously have to learn a pass rush repertoire, as blitzing is not something he often did at BC, but he has the size to be a rush end in the nickel or dime, provided Davis is playing LB and one of the D-lineman needs a break.

This could ultimately save a roster spot. Davis is pretty good off the edge, but he does not have the natural frame and strength to set the edge if the opponent runs the ball. Of course one or more of the backup DEs currently on the roster could play well in camp and earn a roster spot, making this a little less relevant.

In terms of pure LB play, we essentially have four guys who could pretty much play any of the three linebacker positions. With the smaller Davis and Beason being former college safetys, we could really put all four of them on the field as some kind of jumbo defense. We could even use all four of them in more of a coverage look, with Beason/Davis being more of an extra safety in the 3-3-5, for example. That formation could change on the fly to a 3-4, or even a 4-3 if Kuechly is able to develop a pass rush.

When we drafted Kuechly, a lot of people talked about which guy would be the odd man out. I’m not so sure that there has to be an odd man out. I’m not talking about playing a traditional 3-4 defense, I’m talking about the versatility afforded to us when we drafted LK. Not lost on me is the fact that Kuechly also addresses the position where injury is the biggest concern.

Another exciting thing is all four of these guys are signed for the next four seasons, some more. They could really turn this defense into one of the league’s best, assuming we can maintain serviceable part in the secondary, and find another contributor or two on the DL.

As far as the immediate future, if all four guys play 16 games and the DL is no worse than average, this defense will be in the top half in yards and points. The offense, barring several catastrophes, will be just as potent in 2012. That means averaging 25.4 points. At 15th in scoring defense, we’re allowing 21 ppg. Teams with a +4 ppg average are almost always playoff teams.

I'm not sure I would want Kuechly to double as a rush end. The reason is his hands. Rushing the passer will mangle your hands. Blitzing as a LB is usually diff as your running into space instead of taking someone head on from a 3 or 4 pt stance. If you want Kuechly to be covering guys for the next 12 years he's going to need some straight fingers.

Clog the middle. Funnel it to the middle. You only have to defend 1/3 of the field. Sounds simple because it is. All you need is for your two DTs to attract attention. And by that I mean they are good enough to not only draw double teams, but anything else opposing O's will throw at them.

We are set up to allow Rivera to actually run HIS D. And the two biggest cogs in that wheel are DT and LB. You just read Rivera say 6-7 LBs in different sets. My giddy is in overdrive trying to imagine 4-5 LB sets, or 2DTs and 6LBs. Hey, if I can think it, it can happen. That by the way is the wife's motto. I have now been reduced to stealing the wife's lines.

For you folks who prefer to underestimate the D. I have two words for you. Wasted emotions. It takes just as much energy to be positive, not counting the advantagous side effects, as it does to be pessimistic. So if we have determined that the energy dispersed is equal, and the benifits being apparent, why not be positive and excited?

I tell ya what. IF our fortunes improve over last year. We absolutely will be sniffing playoffs. And we are just getting started up in here.

I've debunked this myth several times. You don't need D-Line for McDermott defensive scheme blah blah. First McDermott has to earn some respect as he is the guy known for sending Jim Johnson's defense down the pooper. Next, the Eagles are just as active as the Gaints in getting D-Line in the draft. Dont take my word for it.
