Charley Casserly

Mr. Scot

Recommended Posts

Being let go from CBS, to be replaced by Jason LaCanfora from NFL Network.

Why is that of interest here? Well, take a look at his work history.

Casserly was with the Washington Redskins from 1977 till 2000 when he became GM of the Texans. As of 1982, he was named the Redskin's Assistant GM. Guess what GM he was assisting in that role (Hint: He was the mentor to a guy we all know very well).

Marty Hurney joined the Redskins organization in 1988 after having covered the team as a reporter for the eight years prior. He stayed with the organization (PR department) till 1990 when he bolted for San Diego along with Bobby Beathard. That was when Casserly took over the full GM title in Washington.

Obviously, there'd be some level of familiarity between Hurney and Casserly. Are they friends? No idea. Searching the net for articles including the two of them yielded only discussions about Hurney by Casserly in his role as an analyst for CBS. None of those referenced any personal relationship. And if Hurney has ever mentioned Casserly in any other forum, I haven't heard it.

That said, you can expect a guy with as much NFL experience as Casserly might not be too opposed to jumping back in the fray rather than staying on the media side (say, as a consultant or some such).

Could that be with the Panthers? Don't know. No reason I can see at this point to hold a high expectation of it.

Still, given that he and Hurney should be at least somewhat acquainted, I'd say it's worth making a mental note.

I remember Charley Casserly chirping the poo out of Cam Newton.. "This isn't punt pass and kick now, in this league you gotta throw the ball... The thing about this kid is he just doesn't see it" etc... Do you really want this guy as a talent evaluator? Only good thing he did in his career from my knowledge is picking Mario Williams. He can Suck a d. Do not want :)

Someone buy the man a retainer or something for his overbite also.

We've already got a Director of College Scouting that, by most accounts, we're pretty happy with. Doubt there'd be changes there.

There is also a pro scouting department, of course. As well as general organizational stuff, and of course "consulting".

Mind you, I'm not set to predict anything. To me, it's just one of those "hmmm, that's interesting" type of things.

So, he was fired from NFL Network?

CBS. Jason LaCanfora is moving over from NFL Network to replace him (not fired, contract's up).

Oh, I was hoping he was done with NFL Network. I can't stand this dude on there.

i thought casserly was leaving nfln... ? i saw him thank everyone saying he enjoyed his time there the other day.

anyway, he annoys the poo out of me. his voice is just unbearable. no comment on him joining the organization. though houston has certainly improved without him.
