Why Do We Always Have One Of The Toughest Schedules?

I was having this discussion with one of my friends recently and I told him how over the last decade or so, the Patriots have had one of the easier schedules in the league, yet we are constantly getting hit with one of the toughest. I don't remember the last time schedules were released and I read that we had anything below 14th toughest.

My friend tried to reason that it was because our division is tougher. But, that wasn't always the case, and I'd argue that the Patriots have it just as tough within their own division. Not to mention, I don't recall the Falcons, Bucs, and Saints* having a schedule equal to ours in "toughness" on a regular basis like we have... Then again, I could care less about when their schedules come out, so I could be wrong. And aside from that, I know each division has to play every opponent from another division each year, so those parts of the schedule are identical (within your own division and against selected division).

What is the reason, if there is one?

We're in a strong division in a strong conference: we'll never have a weak schedule without the division tanking.

You also have to remember that their were fewer good teams in the AFC over the last few years, so the AFC East, South and North typically only had one good team while the NFC North, South and East all had two or more.

So basically, it's not that our opponents are that much tougher, it's just that we suck every year, lol.

LOL, naw, it's just that the competition is always tough in our conference. It's like the NFC North. Look at their division. It's tough. Look at the AFC North and East. It's competition. Besides, Panthers should have split with the Falcons and Saints* last year. But they shot themselves in the foot. Chalk it up to rookie everything. Coaches, QB's, DT's, etc.

With the Saints*, Falcons and now the Bucs that seem to have a pulled themselves together. It's just tough to win our division. Then throw in whatever conference outside the NFC south the panthers has to play. It's tough man. If this was an easy division the schedule would be easier. It's just that simple.

Last year our actual SOS was 22nd after all games were played......so that's really not a tough at all.

Pre season SOS is meaningless

Good point, as I am referring to the pre-season SOS.

But, you're right... You can't put a lot into SOS period, as your performance as a team ultimately determines your SOS. You lose, it was tough... You win, it wasn't. There are always teams that you know will come out and perform consistently - Steelers, Pats, Ravens, usually the Eagles, but other than those, there aren't many teams that give weight to the SOS argument.

The way I see it, it doesn't matter what teams we play. Play to win. Besides, the better teams we play, the better our team will become. Which ever way you cut it, every team has talent and a chance to win.

Pats do have a walk-into-the-playoffs schedule this year though.

    • I'm still not touching Hunter He again said the other day that he plans on playing both sides of the ball in the NFL.  If he is allowed to do that, he won't be as good on either side as his potential and he's going to have serious injury issues and have a short career.  If he's not allowed to do it, I think he's going to become a problem when the team isn't winning as he's going to feel him not being used on both sides of the ball is why. He's being coddled in that environment with Deion and I think it's doing a disservice to him to prepare him for life in the NFL where your coach isn't a 2nd father to you, to where you can just walk into his locker room and steal his shoes like Hunter does to Deion.
    • He’s a tad behind them. Around 15ish of 32 starters in the league. He’s well ahead of a lot of guys. Tua, Bryce, Cousins (present), Rodgers (current), Devito/Jones, Minshew, Russ (current), Watson, Smith, Carr, T Laws deep ball is weak as poo IMO, there’s plenty. And it’s not like everyone is ripping 60+ers. The key component is if you can rip and maintain velocity of the 30-40 yarders which he does super well. Legit every report out there from Brugler to PFF to PFN document him as good/above average arm strength.  Eye test tells me it’s pretty much that as well, slightly above average.
    • 6-10 carries for  35-45 yds and 3-5 catches for 15-25 would be great.
