Ron Rivera Comes To Defense Of Tackles

I'm starting to believe Rivera needs some thicker glasses.

Texans game

Arian Foster- 16 carries for 109 yards and 1 touchdown, Ben Tate 7 carries, 26 yards.

Saints* Game

Chris Ivory- 19 carries for 127 yards and 1 touchdown, Sproles 6 carries for 40 yards, Pierre Thomas 5 carries for 30 yards.

If this is Rivera's definition of playing "well" then we're in some huge trouble.

I also love how Rivera said we threw the rookie into the wolves when CLEARLY they weren't even ready to start in the first damn place. Neblett was and is ten times better than them and he starts them anyway. Excellent coaching!!!!

neblett was clearly the better player at the beginning of the season?

Do you even think that through before throwing it out there to see if it sticks?

The Texans game also featured 4 day one starters on defense in the game after halftime. Also, almost every long run was off tackle.

Just like real life, most people really have no clue what the fug they are talking about half the time. That said, there have been a few of us who have said exactly what he's saying all off season.

Yep. Floppin and I have been preaching this all offseason.

I agree. Just look at Philly all those years. Scheme got them the QB.

Cory Simon, Hugh Douglas, Jevon Kearse, Derick Burgess, Trent Cole, Juqua Parker, Mike Patterson, Justin Babin, Cullen Jenkins.

Plus high picks on lineman like McDougle, Laws, Abriamiri, Graham, and the picks this year.

What you call scheme, I call a commitment to getting after the QB.

But yeah, they schemed with thier LB's to get pressure. I also don't expect a coach to say "Yeah we have the worse set of DT's in the league." I think we will all mostly agree by not saying that is good coaching.

You can cherry pick games all you want. Just like I can say in week 6, Turner got 137 yards on 27 carries or 5 yards a carry. In week 14, Turner gets 76 yards on 21 carries or around 3.5 yards a carry which is a big improvement. Or against Tampa Bay the first game, Blount got 19 yards on 11 carries. The second game they averaged around 3 yards a carry.

You can look at one or 2 games and find whatever you want.

The defense was a sieve last year. Poor D-Line play and LB injuries were a huge part of that of course.

I post these stats just in case anyone is delusional about the Panthers defense.

The only stat that truly matters is Ws and Ls but for argument sake, here is were the Panthers ranked in total defense last year: # 28 in total yards allowed. One thing I'll say for them, they were consistently bad.

in rushing yards #25

..better hope Ron Rivera is right.

As others have said, even though the defense struggles, the question was whether the DTs were the issue. We have looked at the stats from football outsider which shows that that our biggest issues were outside runs and stopping runners once they hit the second level. that was as much about the linebackers and the secondary than it was the defensive line.

In 2010 we weren't as bad against the run as the numbers made it seem...I remember a commentator saying at one point late in the year that we were one of the better teams in terms of YPC against....just teams ran constantly on us

In 2010 they constantly ran on us because they were always in the lead....
